Maybe it's pinging?

Checked your timing?
Checked the engine isn't running hot?
Tried it with better fuel?

Troubleshooting problems over the internet based on a noise is almost impossible. Try and explain what conditions its making the noise and what you've tried to do to eliminate it.

what year is the engine, if it's an early coily engine about 96 could be the dreaded broken piston skirt. Long shot but none the less worth a mention.

I fond that I needed to retard the timing oh so slightly from the factory settings to get rid of pinging on several suzuki motors (about 1/3 to 2/3rds of a degree less) This may have been due to modifed cams, shaved heads etc .. never the less it needed to be done.
