Hi all
I have got a hilux 1992 with a 3l diesel in it. So like all hiluxs it was gutless, so I have done a engine swap. Now it has a 5l diesel motor with a brand new turbo set up.... Now my drama I installed new 5l motor and turbo, new heavy duty clutch, new front/rear unis. New 2 and a half exhaust front to rear and it has this mongrell vibration at 1500rpm under load in every gear. But drives out of the vibration at 2000rpm. In netural runs/revs as smoothe as a babys bum.

So I pulled motor out thinking it was a un-balance crank. Stripped down motor got balancer/crank/f-wheel/pressure plate all balanced. Slightly out.....


So back she went together, while I was going I put new rings and bearings/ toyota engine mounts and gearbox mount and 2 flexy pipes in exhaust.

Vibration at 1500rpm stuff me I have done everything I can think of so please can anyone out there please help me.....

Sounds like you have a damaged/unbalanced tail shaft. Quick check, take the rear shaft off/out, and drive with it in 4x4 with the front shaft and see if the vibration is gone. If not, look for a damaged wheel/tyre/rim.

only at 1500rpm at any highway speed?? Then unlikely.

Does it get smokey and/or lack power whilst vibrating?

disconnect rear shaft and run off the front diff and see if it makes a difference.

Was the vibration there before the conversion?

the exhaust not rubbing anywhere on the chassis?

What sort of conversion kit is? I know the early holden v6 conversions had an extension spline on the gearbox input shaft which would produce this kind of vibration. Later versions have an extended hub on the crank to space the flywheel back which is far more reliable.

no it does it any speed highway or around town... it has great power and no somke.. unis are in correct (im a mechanic of 11 years) and exhaust is free from rubbing anthing... as for the caps lock button i wasn't yelling i just satrted typing in it and i couldn't be buggered typing it all again ..... like i said, if you can help me i'm very greatful but keep your dumb ass posts to yourself.........

If you have allready gone to the trouble of pulling the motor out and rebuilding it and the proib still exists then pulling the pump off and having it tested doesnt really seam like a big job.

The only other thing i could suggest is check the centre bearing on the tailshaft.

Might sound odd, but what was the clutch plate like when you pulled it back out? A broken spring or rivet may cause the vibration you speak of???? Could just be a dud clutch.

Could even be as simple as adjusting the pump timing slightly either way and seeing if the problem goes away......that is assuming a mechanic of 11 years set the timing correctly in the first place. :shock:

All centre bearings on the rear tailshaft of Hiluxes need to be binned and a proper one piece tailshaft fitted. Unless you like the vibes that is.

fitting a one piece shaft just adds in the chance of hitting a rock and ending up with a bent shaft, less likely to happen with a 2 piece. I have no vibrations in my lux with a 2 piece. If you change them when they need to be changed or beef them up a bit, which a mate does for his comp truck and his has been running the same one for the last 3 years with no dramas from the center bearing

All i can think off is tires and drive line.. Dose it make a dif under load or not ect???? I have had a bad clutch and bad tire that have caused the same syptoms, elem thoses before you blame the donk.

X 2 If you have the uni joints out of alignment it will cause a vibration as they will be trying to work against each other.
Remove the rear tailshaft and place it on a flat surface and make sure the joints are aligned and working exactly the same.

The other possibility is your rear springs are too soft and your getting excessive axle wrap under load which then puts your tailshaft uni angles out.

You are a mechanic of 11 years, you get a vibration and you pull the crank out to check the balance .... would hate to be your customer.

As others have said I would:

- get a wheel balance rotation
- get a wheel alignment
- pull off rear tailshaft and drive it if it makes a difference get a balance
- pull off front drive shaft and drive it if it makes a difference get a balance
- get it on a dyno and put a strobe on the tail shaft etc
- check for a bad injector
- check the harmonic balancer

If it is on at 1500 and off at 2000 I would be looking at anything which has potential phase and can go in and out. If it never vibrated before then I would be paying particular attention to what you changed. I noticed you didn't include your harmonic balaner in teh crank balance .

I disagree, i've never had a problem with my centre bearing nor anyone else i know who still has one, they are only a problem when they need replacing. 1 piece shafts have their advantages, but it also has its disadvantages. They were put in for a purpose and when you modify outside the intended use well then your going to run into problems, if all here say was taken seriously not alot on a hilux would be left useful, granted all oem parts are not suitable but IMO the centre bearing is not one of them unless you have eleventy inchs of lift, then your going to run into pinion angle problems or ROLLUX syndrome, or possibly duals etc where the tailshaft is no longer long enough to maintain an acceptable angle.

I had a problem like that under load. Ended up being the input bearing and housing for the gearbox. Bearing was slightly lose in the casting, sending the vibration through the whole drive line.

i had something similar in my patrol, only at 2500 rpm, turned out to be the above (only a bush rather than bearing, same area of the box tho)

Thanks heaps for your helpful hints guys. by the way the ute was dynoed and timed by the turbo supplyer.... but i guess ill look at the gear box now. Yes the vibration was there befor i done the engine swap but was very small.. The tail shaft come out on weekend and i went for a drive and its still there..... So i went through my massive pile of invoices and i have done a new center bearing and spigot bearing. i didn't bring up the ute has new suspension front to rear. Im going to have to look at the gearbox. If you think you no what is worng keep it coming in........ cheers


Steelart i pulled out the crank out as a last resort i had done everything you said, bar putting another set of wheels on. Mate i run a very successful business and have done for a while..........

does it do it in all gears or only 1-4th. (assuming it is a 5 speed).

may be counter shaft bearings,
if it does it in all gears it may be input shaft bearings.
