Diesel Shift Light

My has been re-wired from the ground up by an auto electrician friend. Everything is in harness flex so he will probably shoot me if he needs to run more wires. I have no factory dash at all. not worried about the tacho as i have a VDO one already. Just want to wire up a shift light.
Ok you have a Tacho - if it's Electronic what is used to give it a signal from the motor?
What ever it is will develop a pulse directly related to motor speed, this is what you need as an input - all you need now is a device that can be set to trigger a Big Ass Blue or Red Light when the speed gets to your desired motor speed.
Do you know what to use, can you solder?
I can solder but i am really running out of time as i need to have it done by thursday morning.

Even doing 0-100 in under 10 seconds you've got about 3 seconds to plan each shift.
The Soldering was to build a kit from Jaycar or you may be able to get a shift light and just wire it in - Thursday is cutting it a little short but not impossible.

It would really help if you gave some details of what you have, what you need (you have done this bit) and why you need it.
If you already have a VDO tach you may need to swap models but I am certain you gan get models that have a shift light option in them.

There's a product called 'Dakota Digital DSL-1' which will plug into some alternators (4 and 8 cylinders) and give a pulse signal suitable for a tacho (and I guess shift light). But it seems you already have the signal if your VDO is electronic.
I doubt you'll be able to get anything 'off the shelf' specifically for a diesel in Australia by Thursday.

"It uses a standard tacho, road speed, or many other pulse outputs to switch a relay". Costs about $40 if you buy the kit and the neat little box to stick it in.

My thoughts exactly, shift lights are not needed on a diesel. Bloody hell, I have an aftermarket tacho on my V8, the flamin thing came with shift light so I just set it at 8000 rpm.
That way it never blinks at me and gives me the irates.
If this was a serious issue that needed fixing by tomorrow then why don't you go to supercrap and by a tacho with a shift light inbuilt.
I cannot however fathom why anyone who is not racing could possibly want a shift light.

My idea of needing a shift light is so you can set it to the ideal rpm point you want and concentrate on other things going on in the cab. I'm sure Zac is racing it and its always easier to see a light than a needle when bouncing around.

The difference between 4340 and 4650 is so miniscule that if it were a problem and an rpm range you never wanted to enter, you could just wind the governer back down by 300rpm.
When in the heat of battle,with a helmet,intercom,looking where youre going doing 80 plus KPH it is just one less thing to worry about, and if you think a TD42 will live at 4650 RPM minute in and out with all disregard to RPM you are mistaken. The difference between 4340 and 4650 is so miniscule that if it were a problem and an rpm range you never wanted to enter, you could just wind the governer back down by 300rpm.
Winding the governer back in this case reduces max fuel also so that is not an option and some will understand.
