Put a micro sw in the tach just where the needle hits the revs you want, run a light off the sw.

Cheers,

not worried about the tacho as i have a VDO one already. Just want to wire up a shift light.
Ok we are getting somewhere - oh and the gear you already have - Geez how the hell did I know you were going ti say that

Ok you have a Tacho - if it's Electronic what is used to give it a signal from the motor?
What ever it is will develop a pulse directly related to motor speed, this is what you need as an input - all you need now is a device that can be set to trigger a Big Ass Blue or Red Light when the speed gets to your desired motor speed.
Do you know what to use, can you solder?
My has been re-wired from the ground up by an auto electrician friend. Everything is in harness flex so he will probably shoot me if he needs to run more wires. I have no factory dash at all. Complete fabricated new dash.

I can solder but i am really running out of time as i need to have it done by thursday morning.

Cheers

You could always just glance at the needle.
Even doing 0-100 in under 10 seconds you've got about 3 seconds to plan each shift.

The power and signal is all at the Tacho, all you need to cut into is the three wires that should be Positive, negative and Tacho pulse.
The Soldering was to build a kit from Jaycar or you may be able to get a shift light and just wire it in - Thursday is cutting it a little short but not impossible.

It would really help if you gave some details of what you have, what you need (you have done this bit) and why you need it.

If you already have a VDO tach you may need to swap models but I am certain you gan get models that have a shift light option in them.

There's a product called 'Dakota Digital DSL-1' which will plug into some alternators (4 and 8 cylinders) and give a pulse signal suitable for a tacho (and I guess shift light). But it seems you already have the signal if your VDO is electronic.

I doubt you'll be able to get anything 'off the shelf' specifically for a diesel in Australia by Thursday.

Man I wish sometimes my diesel revved that hard and quick that I needed a visual indicator to chance gears. I reckon once I get about 500 rpm below peak torque I've got about 30 seconds to recognise that and grab a new gear else risk falling outside my powerband (which is just off idle to about 40000rpm). Phew only just make it sometimes. Mind you this is good seeing as any fast shifting quicker than about 20 seconds seeing a bit of teeth crunching in the agricultural 80 series manual gearbox. :silly:

Really if you have the time and can't find anything else and are getting desperate have a troll through the Jaycar catalogue. As already stated they do a few possible items although they are in kit form. One that comes to mind is the Rev Limiter/Gear shift indicator. You need other components to make the rev limiter work so don't worry if you don't need that. "Two lamps will illuminate consecutively before red line....uses hall effect, points, low voltage signal reluctor or ignition coil to measure rpm"

From memory they also sell hall effect kits so anything is possible.

Another is the Frequency Switch - suggested uses: Operate a shift light at set revs.
"It uses a standard tacho, road speed, or many other pulse outputs to switch a relay". Costs about $40 if you buy the kit and the neat little box to stick it in.

Maybe that's 4,000 not 40,000 RPM :D

   My thoughts exactly, shift lights are not needed on a diesel. Opinion wont change until you give us some details on your high reving and super secret car.

Or are you worried someone will copy you, because people will most likely see it eventually.

How much of a pity is it that you ask a simple question and you get f#wits that have to reason why.

If you dont have the brains nor the info to work out why its required then go back to school.

They are there for a specific reason and yes this setup requires it.

Actually if you go back to school you might work out why it's not required.

What are these specific reasons? Is the dash looking a little empty?

Bloody hell, I have an aftermarket tacho on my V8, the flamin thing came with shift light so I just set it at 8000 rpm.

That way it never blinks at me and gives me the irates.

If this was a serious issue that needed fixing by tomorrow then why don't you go to supercrap and by a tacho with a shift light inbuilt.

I cannot however fathom why anyone who is not racing could possibly want a shift light.

Why do you want one?????

This is late but might help. Does your tacho fitted now have an output that could be connected like the instructions in the link?
http://www.autometer.com/download_instruction/458a.pdf

My idea of needing a shift light is so you can set it to the ideal rpm point you want and concentrate on other things going on in the cab. I'm sure Zac is racing it and its always easier to see a light than a needle when bouncing around.

The specific reasons are we have lifted the RPM to around 4650,the engine makes good power to 4340 and we need to keep it in the power band.

so shift when its at 4340 then :P

an extra cpl hundred RPM is hardly gunna make a differance. if it is gunna make a difference, then do what has already been sugested!

So your ears, eyes, feet etc don't tell you the engine stopped gaining revs?

The difference between 4340 and 4650 is so miniscule that if it were a problem and an rpm range you never wanted to enter, you could just wind the governer back down by 300rpm.

When in the heat of battle, with a helmet, intercom, looking where youre going doing 80 plus KPH it is just one less thing to worry about, and if you think a TD42 will live at 4650 RPM minute in and out with all disregard to RPM you are mistaken. Yes the 300 RPM will help

Winding the governer back in this case reduces max fuel also so that is not an option and some will understand.
