Another leak question

Post by DionM »

Now I'm official confused ...

81 2 door auto. Got ATF leaking from somewhere, however it seems to be collecting on the transfer case? I haven't had a look inside, but I just want to make sure that I what I think is the transfer case is in fact the transfer case ...

View of what I think is the transfer box:

Plug on other side from above photo - I assume this is the filler/level plug for the transfer box?

I really hope the previous owner hasn't filled the transfer box with ATF ... but it shifts between ranges fine etc ... so who knows.

I'm currently removing the interior so will remove the interior panel so I can see it all from above ... sorry about the dumb questions, I'm still learning. :?

If you have just bought it - drop all the oils and start from fresh - that way you know exactly what is in there and you can start changing at regular intervals....

Must be honest here, if it ain't pouring out, leave it alone. But change to oils all round of course.

I remember someone in the club satying to me years ago when I bought my first Rangie " oil leaks, unless you have a botomless pit of money, learn to put up with them!!!!". I still follow this philosophy, unles you haver the exxon valdeiz disaster under your Rangie :!: :!: :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words:

I have leaks under Aquarangier that have been there for the 3 1/2 years I have owned it. Example here is the front pulley seal, has always leaked since I have owned it. Hasn't gotten any worse, so I don't bother fixing it.

Just my thoughts. But good luck wiuth fixing the leaks. Hope you stop them.

Trav,

I agree. I can put up with minor leaks like these. My old Pulsar leaked too ... it leaked under the cam cover, so I fixed that real good, then it leaked under the dizzy, so I fixed that, then it leaked from somewhere else ... so I just stopped trying to fix it.

The only reason I am chasing 'em is because I need to get a safety cert, so I'm trying to fix them. They're not big, but to a guy giving a safety cert, I'm sure they are

Depends on where they are leaking as well, they don't like oil leaking near the brakes or out of the transfer on to hand brake.

Brakes are okay, transfer is far enough away from the handbrake.

Anyway, I shall investigate. If its a cheap fix, no dramas.

Okay, I get you now.. Didn't know that you were getting a RW!!

What I did when I bought my first 2 door was give the trans, engine and the like a good gerni and this was enough for us to get it passesd as there were no leaks visible under inspection (drove the Rangie straight there).

There were a couple of minor things like a tailight was not working and a cracked lens, but it passes with flying colours. The inspectors get picky about oil leaks, obviously don't understand britih engeneering!!!

Good luck with it all,

Yeah, gotta get a RWC. I know of the trick regarding cleaning it immediately, and shall try that :D No big rush anyway, I can do a few things while its off the road - might as well rather than paying rego for it to sit in pieces in my back yard ...

Mine has a cracked lens too (rear pax side) that I am tracking down a replacement.

Always the way hey! It's alright, I've been looking on and off and the 2dr was only a last minute decision anyway. Up till then I was looking at a late 80s one with all the tricks
