Possible stupid shock question

Post by 110 TUFF »

Can some one clear this up for me!!

A guy at TJM told me that shocks ( pin to pin ) are measured from very tip of pin to very tip of pin to get there compressed and extended length, while another Guy at ARB told me it's from base of pin to base of pin. so my shock is etheir a 670mm extd or a 530mm extd!!!

WHICH ONE IS IT?

The monroe cat says pin pin is measured at base of pin.

Base to base should be correct - because pin length can change between brands. Shocks with eyes are usually measured from the centre of the eye.

That is correct, but it is strange because you also get different size eyes :?

ok, thats what i thought base to base, rang opposite lock to enquire about some other shocks and they said that it's from middle of pin to middle of pin ( where the bushes sit ).

I'll just stick with base to base!

Yes but the eye is always centered over the pin it mounts on - so it doesn't matter.

but if the eye is larger for example the shock will be extended further at rest due to the centre of the eye moving in relation to the shock body

No the other way around. If the eye is larger the shoch will be less extended at a vehicle's normal ride height than the same shock with a smaller eye on the same vehicle.

Koni measure base of pin to base of pin like Monroe.
I think Bilstein are the same.
Rancho go from the middle of the pin.

Makes it hard to compare apples to apples.

110 tuff , just remember 80 series toy shocks have longer pins.
but doesn't matter if you measure from base of pin to base of pin.

Thanks fellas, just something else to add. I phoned Opossite Lock today regarding information on their shocks extended lengths etc. they told me they can't and won't give me this information as other competitors are trying to steal it from them. I told him that i needed this information to work out how high to space my towers if im going to use his shock. and if there lengths would suit. guess he doesn't want me to use his shocks. He would only give me the price.

Cheers for the info fellas,

Drew. :)

That's the biggest load of crap I have ever heard... how/why can competitors steal shock lengths??? It's not like it is secret patented info.
