Simex Centipedes certainly aren't that old, neither are Mudzillas. There are plenty of other rag tyres out there. They still make them because they conform better off road thus providing more traction. The down side is, is when on road the tread trends to roll off itself on corners where a steel belted radial will keep the tread flat on the road.

Though a different application, Drag racers use a Bias belted tyres on the front to take out the positiveness of the steering when running slicks.

death wobble

Post by brendan rooke »

I dunno about anyone else's experience with death wobbles were but i had a shocker today.

I just came through a roundabout and was excellerating...probably doing 30-35 ks, i hit a rough patch in the road and away she went....got this massive wobble in the front end, i thought i was loosing both front wheels it was that bad.

I had to come to a complete stop in my lane in traffic and then start again.

The look on the old girls face that was trying to pull out of the a drive way i was passing was priceless, i couldnt imagine what was going through her head when she seen this thing coming towards here with the front wheels going everywhere except straight.

Anyways, got home slowely...jacked it up, checked everything.

Wheel bearings could have an eighth turn maybe, tierods are fine, brand new efs extreme dampner, brand new springs, bushes, shackles, tyres just refitted to 10" rims and balanced.

I jacked the wheels off the ground and grabbed the wheel the same way you would to check tierods and i shock the shit out of it and fark me....

Whats the go with that????

Mounting my steering damper like this fixed my death wobbles for life!, id done so much trying to fix DW but once i welded a bracket on the diff and mounted back to the tie rod ,no more DW, i know it only masks the true problem but id seriously done almost everything i could and id still get DW.

well not quite. shimmys are inherent in any suspension design, and not always a sign of warn parts. they seem to be much more common in solid axle setups though. Most vehicles come from the factory with at least one steering damper for that reason.

once you start lifting and running bigger tyres it only exaggerates the problem. I like your setup. I guess there is less leverage on the damper this way, thus an improved road feel.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
