Spare tyre... max diameter

Spare tyre... max diameter
Silly but serious question. Does anyone know whether a 35" tyre will fit on the back door?? I know 33" swampers do (really 34)..
Frank, your JT2s would be close to 35, how do they fit?

Grant my 33" spare just fitted (rubbed ever so slightly on the rear bumper when closing/opening the rear barn door) but not enough to create any real resistance.
After the 2" body lift the JT2's clear ok but these are a wider offset rim (ROH Trac 2), I'll take a pic later. My rear bar is still the standard height (hasn't been modified for the body lift).
I think with a 35" spare and the standard bumper it won't fit..............
Either leave the rear bumper as is after the body lift to create more room or have a custom rear bar made up. Maybe raising the mount on the door may work but I haven't really had a good look yet.
Here's a pic, there is about three quarters of an inch room with the JT2's on the ROH Trac 2 rim (15x8") after the 2" b/l (bumper at standard height).

Thanks Frank. Your a gem. Looks like a lot of stuffing around now. I lifted the bumper after the body lift allready. See if i can raise the carrier on the backdoor.
Its the last thing I ever would have thought about, until i changed the spare the other day and thought it would be a good idea to check.

Re: RE
How about building a bumper with a swing out tire carrier. I dont think these doors were designed for that kind of weight over the long haul.
Or you could build a steel bumper, and under the spair tire have an semicirular dip in the bumper so the tire clears.

33 Procomp fit without an issue.
When I took a set of 34 JT's out for a test run I had to strap the spare to the roof cause it dinna wanna fit on the back door.
I like the idea of modin' the rear bar with a dip but I do agree that the rear door maybe was not designed to carry that kinda weight over the long haul. (The difference in weight between the 31 Cooper STT's and 33 Procomps are huge)

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading
I don't know that I'm really serious about it, but I've considered asking someone like Kaymar about a rear bar with spare wheel carrier (after I go to 33's). This would get the weight off the back door, and, if I get it right, there should be room for two - I have this wierd idea about long range touring in a shorty, and I don't want to carry a spare on the roof!
Anybody ever looked into this?

I am not overly concerned about the weight on the backdoor. Had a 33" Baja Claw as a spare on a steel rim sitting on the carrier for nearly 2 years and there was no issues. i am now going to run simex on alloys so the weight i believe will be less than what i usually carry.
On my first pajero, 10 years ago, the aim was to build a capable night run truck. So I bought an 84 swb, that ran V6 paj running gear and a 3.8 V6 to match. I threw an arb bullbar at it, and a arb steel rear bumper to suit a range rover. With a bit of mod, it worked. Looked agricultural but was as solid as a rock. Truck was rolled and written off short time later.

Thanks mike... Thats ooodles of room... Bags not doing any reversing though! Every time you look in the rear vision mirror there will be this mammoth lug of rubber staring at ya. Looking at some 35/13.50/16 Baja Claws tomorrow, so we will see how they fit. I know they are gonna be too wide but ill have a looksy. Cant make up my mind about bloody tires!! If I could use 15" rims, would have got meself some TSLs but thats not the case.

Ok,
I believe that the import pajs (j tops) have a higher spare wheel bracket to accommodate the stock 18"alloys (33" high rubber). The aust delivered pajs unfortunately dont allow for anything larger than 33". To fit the 35" spare, i am left with no choice but to modify the bracket.

Is the rear bar a different shape? When I checked out mine I expected the interference to be around 5 o'clock, but Mike's seems to be at 6 o'clock.
And on a slightly different note - how do you guys (Mike and Grant) expect me to keep up? Or am I the one left at the intersection to tell Search and Rescue which way to start looking?

NJSWB,
Have you got a rear airlocker in your truck? I may know of a guy whos got a 2nd hand one to suit. When i was looking for a new paj, there was a guy selling one in brisbane and he had a rear airlocker to suit a 3.0L.. I will try to find the details. Redrocket may know the guy I think. Had a white NL shorty like mine, ome springs, lives at cannon hill???? Could be a goer if its still there.

Spare wheel bracket was a piece of piss. Just redrilled the mounting holes about 40mm higher and rewelded the nuts to the back of the bracket. Tyre just touches the bumper but is no cause for concern.
