Grafting Gu diff centre into 80 series housing

Howdy,
Just wondering who has or know's someone who has done this?

im wanting to get a gu diff centre grafted into my 80 series diff housing,
so that its a gu centre with 80 spider gears and then run 80 series longfield cv's and axles,

so im chasing prices on to get it completely done, and how wide does the whole diff from hub to hub end up being? do the axles have to be modified to allow for the difference in the width of the diff?

Did a night trip with Wally in the ute years ago. It's an awesome car, and he's not afraid to use it.

It was set up for OBC when I was out with it - spare diff centres bolted in 'glass tray sides etc.

As others have said Wally is setup to do this particular conversion.

But to clear up any confusion, the Nissan diff does not fit into a 80 series front housing. The 80 series front knuckles, hubs, axles, cv's, steering, etc are used with a modified rear housing from a 60 series.

Is this so toyota guys can point to their diffs and try and tell people that they are still toyota instead of the easier option of just putting the complete diff under the car? :D

But seriously is this really a better or easier option? Just curious.

it's so they can beef up the center without having to put up with the weak cheese crap nissan calls CV's.

i thought they cut the diff centre housing out. and then weld a gu diff and its housing in. i thought they cut at the point where it tapers down to the axle tubes? kinda like my dodgy drawing shows......

what have you done to your front 80 centre to try to beef it up already? they can be made pretty stout

got an 80 with 37inch treps and external beadlocks, first winch comp we exploded a locked from diff, and then wrecked the open diff we swapped into it aswell,
Then Goat, the owner cut the center out and grafted a 75 series one in, but first it didnt get enough oil because of the pinion angle and wrecked the pinion bearings, then after filling it a bit extra we then somehow stripped the nut completely of the pinion and it came straigh of still attached to the tail shaft,

he is now going to buy the strengthened gear sets and try them, we are competing in winch comps so a fair bit of strain is put on the front diff when winching up some of the steeper winch walls..

See when i get mine done im going the gu centre straight up and run lonfields, then i know it can handle what i throw at it and dont have to worry about it letting me down when im racing or playing,

but Goat is stubborn, and a thinker he would rather sit in his shed on the island with a beer and think !
im just trying to get as much info and prices together so i can try and talk him into doing it the strongest way.

YOUR DREAMING. :? A GU front is heaps stronger than an 80 front and both can be beefed up with cromo axles and cv,s. :finger:

A GU front is plenty strong enough and cv and axles are only $220 to replace if you do happen to break one which I have not broken in 4 years of comps. It does come down to how you drive and I drive every hill that everybody else does.

Ludacris races winch comps, so rock, mud, dirt, logs, anything the organisers decide they have to winch over, and try and drive,

doe sanyone have a photo of the finished product of a gu graft? do all the steering/ control arm mounts have to be moved?

I used to smash a GQ front CV on almost every stage when the V8 went in and it was stock then.

Look you can maybe get an 80 series Diff strong with grafting and what ever but the GU front in stock form is and will be strong enough. Replacment parts are everywhere and cheap so you can almost always finish the events. To some extent it is not always about strongest, it is also about available parts. There are 90% patrol winch challenge trucks compared to the rest and most of us have spare CV,s axles and diff centres at the race or sitting at home in the shed.

I have one using 105 series knuckles, etc. I could take a pic but it wouldn't show anything special. As I said above:

So yes, the panhard, radius arm, spring and shockie mounts have to be moved from the 80 series axle housing to the modified 60 series axle housing. Steering links bolt to the knuckles as before and require no change.

1MadEngineer, you posted some info a while ago on how to upgrade the 80 diff it was for a guy who had an 80 and had blown a couple, some good info in your post but I can't find it

If GU stock is strong enough, then it certainly isn't that hard on front ends, if you look at 1madengineers posts on this topic elsewhere on the forum, you don't need the grafting to get a solid enough 80 front end. smashing GQ CV's isn't really that big a challenge, and if the front end is built strong, spare parts supply isn't a huge issue.
