40 series indicator woes

Post by pig in shit »

hi everyone
ok well anyone that knows a forty reasonably well would know that the wires running to the indicator go out through the side of the firewall and up the inside of the bolt that holds the indicator down. this leaves the wires open underneath the guards.
now my problem that i am always having is breaking the wires and having to constantly fix them.
and before you ask, yes my tyres are probably to big, as they are what causes them to break when the tyre is pushed into the guard.
but im not out to buy new tyres.
just curious if anyone has done something to pass this problem like running the wires elsewhere.
i have heat shrinked/insulation taped/ duct taped/ cable tied etc etc all to no avail

any help appreciated.

hey mate, just silicone them so they run out of the way, and that way they won't flap and move around, and should offer some short time protection against the big tyres, at leaset for a bit, or look at putting on 75 series indicators,

Yeah, get rid of them, I now run no factory 40 lights, and the whole setup is so much more reliable. Used to have heaps of dramas keeping the guard mounted ones, and the tail lights working properly.

Use double insulated electrical wire from the factory lights through to the connection inside the engine bay. It is a lot tougher than the factory wiring. I don't like the look of 75 series lights on a 40, i reckon it spoils that classic 40 look.

I rewired mine with a separate ground wire going back into the loom, also commoned up each metal light housing so you don't have that annoying flicker with the park lights. They now work as they should. As for the loom hanging under the guard, well I don't know.

i have found that you can only use a thin wire as you have to fit 3 of them through the middle of the bolt, unless you drill the hole a bit bigger i suppose.
and yes i havent ever been much of a fan of the 75s lights on a 40. still dont know if im convinced to use them.

They look good, but with the bulbs they supply, the light output is terrible. Not sure if its the globes/wiring or the lense.

I remounted the base plates in the side of the indicator housing and bolted them into the side of the top part of the guard. Easy mod to do but they still got smashed up as you can see...

I repainted the old beast and soon ditched them for small led indicators and the headlights had parkers anyway.

They were the first things to get shifted when I rebuilt my shorty all those years ago.
This is what I originally did

I'm making a new bar so it has gone to this now, still unfinished at the moment.

it's never a problem until it can't be fixed, even then it' only a minor set back

As you can clearly see we all have had dramas with the idicator light set up.. I used heat shrink over the wires on mine and then clipped them to the guard edge it is a slightly longer set of wires but utilizing the edge of the guard keeps the 40 look but provides wire protection.. that works for me. but more extensive changes can be done to rid the problem totaly.. any of the other ideas are all great. but it all depends on what you want and find easiest for you.. enjoy

yep i figured it would be an across the board problem.
i am not much of a fan of these aftermarket led lights and what not that other people have used instead, i like the factory lights.
ill have to keep playing around with the wires until i find something that works.

or ill buy some bump stops :P
