i think you are ya big sook. Cliffhanger you dont see cars for an hour at times on the 5hr GPS stage. Do the competing vehicles at king of the rim have to have a vehicle mounted UHF and is there a dedicated chanel for the stage your on?

yeah Mick..the only difference is that their is two of you which means there is a good chance that one of you wil be able to do something even if the other is injured...i was purely asking as a driver of a single seater buggy

Yes, all vehicles were required to have a working UHF and were to be on Channel 13. Sounds like you will be doing a lot of driving mickyd to look after dave whenever he wants to go wheeling

Some of you guys are a touchy lot and I’m really sorry Dave if you took my response as having a go at you.

My reply was not intended to cover Dave’s post only but a number of those already posted as they gave the impression (well I took it that way) as if we were not concerned about people’s safety. This was Wendy’s response not Brenden’s

Some posts have mentioned some very positive alternatives which we will address for the November event to make it safer and thank you for those suggestions keep them coming.

I’ve had my say about some of the safety issues we had in place for the first event which some people had not known and look forward to more suggestions regarding helping to make this sport as safe as possible for all.

Hi Everyone!!


I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS to Team SNAKE RACING as the winner of the buggy class and TEAM DIESEL as the winner of modified class!! I also wanted to say well done to all competitors for taking their beloved vehicles to the Rim and being part of the event!

The snake team had a great day and really enjoyed the tracks. We are looking forward to getting up to beautiful Queensland again soon!

To the Harris family, you have a lovely park with fantastic facilities. It is a great thing you are doing for off road motorsport and keep up the good work!

so it seems that the exact scenario i asked about has in fact happened at the King of the Hammers in the states and it was only through sheer luck that a spectator was standing in the right place that the guy is still alive..

hmmmm..maybe i am not getting old..perhaps i just possess too much commonsense and can see when a bad situation could possibly happen

I don't want to sound like Im adding fuel to the fire (no pun intended) But I drive by myself on gazeted roads all the time any thing could happen with no one around to help me. I Know it is not a race senario but accidents still happen. This does not stop me from driving. There is a reason why being involved in motor sports increases my life insurance, but that is what I enjoy doing and think it is worth the risk. If your that worried about a fire maybe you should wear a suit and fit a fire bomb thingy.

Yes, there was someone positioned up the creek, in fact it was myself. After the 3rd car came through I was called away to recover the unimog, due to no radio reception, a guy walked about 1km up the creek to notify me that we were required for it recovery.

Before I left, I had walked 3 cars through the top section with the only drama being drive line breakages.

Recovery of the unimog.... was it urgent, not really. But we were lead to believe that our assistance was urgently required.

but since the only answer i have been given is.."dont stir sh!t because you are bringing the industry down".."stop being such a cry baby".."stop making assumptions about events because you werent there"

well frankly if this is the attitude then i am glad i wasnt there...

so you were posted up the creek but where needed for another recovery elsewhere, meaning that you actually werent up the creek for the event...so i take the answer as being that NO there was not adequate people there to police the track..

question answered....i will stick to wheeling on my own on tracks that i choose..that way it is my decision to put myself in that place, not someone elses who doesnt want to take responsibility for people who are paying to be in their event..

Rhett..i agree if you are wheeling where you chose to wheel and it is your decision to be there then all well and good..if i am entering a competition and being told that this is the track to drive on then i expect the track to be patrolled in a safe manner..if not then i wont enter the event...

this was the simple question i asked in the first place and all that happened was everybody got on their high horse over it...

well back to your original question,
id say in a fire and knocked out situation there would be dramas...
however i cant see how you would put yourself in that situation (if you were there you would understand) where there were limited marshels and speed enough to be knocked out.. the only section was the creek run which brett was there for most of it then there was at least 2 cars stopped and another 2 cars hauling past, all of which stopped to see if we needed help....

from my opinion a fire situation is possible, a knocked out situation is VERY unlikely, unless your Paul Briggs..

Being a timed event this might have got them a podium spot.

I think that's a pretty good idea, probably should be a requirement.

With all this talk of occupant safety, I looked but haven't been able to find a copy of the vehicle regs and requirements for me to build around. Prob blind and can't see it for looking.

Dave makes some very good points in this thread and by no means are they derogatory to the sport. I have competed in comps that Bowlsy had a hand in organising and believe he is justified in posing that question.

There are obviously a few teething issues with this being the first comp of it's kind run at the park and it sounds like it went fairly well.

We all know motorsport is dangerous, for both competitors and spectators.

There are a few issues that will need to be addressed prior to the next competitiion at Scenic Rim. I believe Brendan and his team will have no problems at all getting these sorted out.
For those who live close to that park, i.e. Brisbane and the Gold Coast, you need to step up and volunteer to marshall the next comp. It's all about having more people at checkpoints and better communication between the marshalls. Not hard...

Spectator areas will need to be better positioned, sectioned off in a safer manner and manned with at least 2 marshalls at each area to keep the stupid factor wandering into harms way. Again not hard...

As for single seater buggies, amend some of the rules to include stricter safety precautions. These can be "borrowed" from any number of sources online. WERock USA might be a good start???
