got myself a 93 cherokee sport 1st prob already, OVERHEATING
Hi guys as per the title got myself a Cherokee. Its stock and automatic. Once I lift it and chuck some good tires on, how would it go offroad? Or should I just not bother with it? Other planned mods will be sliders, exhaust and front and rear bars as I just got my mig setup with gas
Thanks in advance for any advice guys,
Luke.

Re: got myself a 93 cherokee sport (where do i start)
you sound like your on the right track to me, I had a XJ before I got my WJ, use drop boxes for the front control arms, there great and no DW, just use big springs for the rear, try contanting http://www.wooders.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; what those guy's don't know about jeep ain't worth knowing !!!!!!!!!
Re: got myself a 93 cherokee sport (where do i start)
out of the box a XJ will surprise Japanese 4x4's in its sleep add a small lift some good tyres some rock sliders and lockers and you will be able to tour and play big in the same jeep
or go to town on it cut guards and 35's and look out.
Weakest parts is the D35 rear (TJ D44 is an easy swap)
Slip yoke on transfer case and there is plenty of kits to fix that consider fr anything above 2" lift and mandatory for big lifts

It came with front end lifting springs just need to sort springs and long shocks for the rear end, is there anything else I will need for a nice boring 2 inch lift? Gotta keep it fairly legal cause my missus will occasionally drive it
Re: got myself a 93 cherokee sport 1st prob already, OVERHEA
ok so i guess im in need of tech help now.
had it long enough to find all the little bugs
it gets up to 100 degrees on the temp guage occasionally in stop start driving. did a full rad flush and replaced the yucky brown stuff with nice green coolant. its not using coolant as far as i can tell but ill report back in a few days on that one.
compression is good. i work for a crash parts supply company (all crash parts in virginia if any of you need stuff /shameless plug) so i can get a new radiator dirt cheap, should i go for copper core or alloy/plastic tank?
will also get myself a water pump and do that as i go
its well over due for a oil and filter change and a auto service too. going to do both asap. i guess this will help cooling a LOT too.
What grade of oil is good for it? i have a 6l bottle of good 20w/50 if that will do it? how many litres will i need? filter is here waiting to go once i have the right oil.
again the same with the trans, is it like a commodore auto where you just pull the bottom off, let all the oil drain out and replace the filter? i have a mate that runs a ultra tune and that have one of the auto flush machines, is this a better way to do the auto service? does the jeep auto use a special grade of oil or can i use regular dx III?? how many litres will i need with a filter change?
im planning to take her off road so would i get any good benefit to cooling to the transmission by installing a trans cooler i have here spare, its about 20cm x 20cm.
thanks guys mucho grande appreciating any help forwarding,
Luke.

100c is not hot in an XJ and is a typical temperature, not unusual for them to sit between 95c and a touch over 100c, the electric fan doesn't even cut in until 105c
Cheers

was good to replace the rusted old water pump and leaking radiator anyways.
also the trans has had its service and seems to be running a lot nicer now and for anyone whos interested they dont use a dx3 type fluid. i now have penrite synthetic mercon type flluid, it fucken stinks but is the best stuff for these autos.
Re: got myself a 93 cherokee sport 1st prob already, OVERHEA
I've been running a '96 XJ for a while. It's quite capable, but the overheating is the bane of my life.
So far I've replaced water pump, thermostat, viscous clutch on the fan and I've put 50mm spacers on the back of the bonnet. It's under control for now, but I haven't been off road for a good 12 months.
There's also supposed to be a good aftermarket radiator available in Australia for the XJ. That'll be my next step if the last lot of fixes don't work.

What aboitu installing a cooler thermo fan switch? if the guys are saying the thermos don't kick in until 105, then why not get one that kicks in at 85?pugsly wrote:I've been running a '96 XJ for a while. It's quite capable, but the overheating is the bane of my life.

Re: got myself a 93 cherokee sport 1st prob already, OVERHEA
I had an overheating problem and i baught all the usual stuff Radiator waterpump fan clutch even hard wired the thermo through a relay so it ran when i turned on the ignition .Turned out to be a warped head not cracked. I was also told that if you run the 4ltr under its 95-100 c they screw up the boars in the motor and you end up with a oil burner. Also can any one tell me what the xj is like as a tow vehicle as i want to tow a car trailer and my comp truck. cheers
