Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
Hey all, I'm looking in the future, to mount an electric winch under the tray of my LN106 Hilux.
My question is, What winches are you guys running for mid mounts?
Electric, Hydraulic, PTO?
I was thinking electric, mainly because there's a battery mounted less than half a metre away (stuff all voltage drop).
What sort of electric? (I don't drive comps, I'm just a weekend warrior who needs more approach than my current front bar will allow!) - Hi or slow mount, obviously both can be modded for speed at a later date if needed.
Any pics and advice would be much appreciated!
Cheers, Dano.

Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
Bill / Portalrover /Daddylonglegs (can't remember username) posted up pics of a landie he built with a centre mounted hi-mount. The winch faced the rear and was fed to the front via a series of pulleys. Rear winching was therefore a double line pull as you left the front connected. The vehicle owner's name was Nigel. It was featured in a mag - anybody have pics?

Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
my GQ is running one
bought it off 5lt patrol on here, if you have a search there are probablu half a dozen threads i got infos from to build mine.
i was restricted as to where i could mount mine as it came with the drive shaft already, it runs the nissan PTO box on the gearbox and a 40 - 60 series toyota PTO winch.
i run the line straight, its very squeezy, between exhaust and chassis, touches chassis when the line is feeding on hard over on one side, it runs up and around a snatch block i chopped up and made fit and then it runs across under the front crossmember into the fairlead in the centre of the bar.
it was a mission but i love my PTO.
only reason i went midmount was to run much more line (70 metres i think i ended up buying), and PTO so i didnt have absolutely shite line speed without spending big dollars, and the power to turn a large diameter drum.
issues to consider
what line do you want to run, its gonna get covered in road grime, water spray, grit, exhaust/engine/gearbox heat, everything unsavoury, your line will cop it.
means you cant run plasma, or any rope really.
i ended up with 11mm 6/25 2070 grade steel core, i think thats right, and cost me a bit over 300 bucks
are you happy welding under your car, or how are you going to mount it? to the tray? would have to be some seriously serious tray mounts for me to winch off the tray
http://s29.photobucket.com/albums/c292/ ... ch%20pics/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
thats my album of pics, i will have to get some finished ones up, i think it was getting late when i finished and never got any up, took me a good 12 hours or so to do it, building the cradle, then bracing the crossmembers it was mounted to etc.
its taken some serious loads, amazed i havnt broken a shear pin yet, and the whole thing is holding together well, but im gonna know about it when it hits the back of the cab

Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
Hey KE70,
Thanks for the info, I'm more than happy to weld under the old girl, I was thinking of making a cradle to mount it off the chassis, by shapeing some flat plat to follow/cup the chassis.
I was thinking about PTO, this would be my best option, but I'm unsure as to weather or not the T/Case has provision????? ANYONE?
Thanks Isuzurover,
I did a search and found some answers, but not all the ones I was after.
I'll have a look around again tonight to see those rigs you mentioned.
Chhers, Dano.

Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
Hey mate.
I have the same problem with the front approach with a highmount on the front of my hilux.
I have been thinking about mid mounting it.But running the cable is a pain in the bum.
So I'm thinking about mounting the radiator behind the cab and putting the winch in its place.
From the measurement I've taken a lowmount would be easier then a highmount.
Cheers.

so long as you realise welding to the chassis is a registration no no?
mines all welded to the crossmembers and tray supports, not the actual chassis

Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
NOOOO, not going to weld to the chassis, I'm thinking of making something that cups the chassis and uses original bolt holes. Also incorporating bracing and what not, back to crossmembers and so forth.
Answers.....or should I say questions
Does an LN106 transfer have an output or provision for PTO?
PTO, Low or HI mount? (which I suppose despends on the first Question )
Has a Mid Mount been done in an LN106, any pics?
How many legs does a centipede really have? lol
Cheers, Dano.

The more I think about it the easier and more practical it seems to use an electric winch, I mean no need to modify transfer case, run shafts, look for a particular type of winch.....which given the age of the 40 - 60 series ones, might need work/money spent.
Line speed is not an issue.....yet! I'm thinking get a "slow mount" and more steel cable than standard, then as the need for speed arises, then look at more/bigger motors.
Cheers, Dano.
Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
well the way i see it is most PTO winches are factory fitted and do bugger all work.
you have to use the right oil in them which doesnt effect the brass worm gear, but other than that not much goes wrong.
having not seen the thread that was linked as i cant be bothered signing up im not sure what they had to do to use the transfer to drive it, but if it can be done i suggest it.
only downside is you cant use your PTO when you roll it

Hey Bakerboy ,,, yeah i'm the fella from the link above. I'm not real flash on the puter so i can't post pics, but if you have any questions. ( maybe one of the fellas off Perth4X4 might post some up for me)
I used an electric winch (terrain tamer) and also mounted my 2 batteries right next to the winch.
I set mine up very similar to how Bill set up Nigels. (missing Daddylonglegs these days,, legend)
Just be very careful that you don't turn your chassis into a pretzel,, the forces applied to parts of the chassis during a tough winch are incredible and the chassis may not like it. I've done alot of bracing to make sure it all stays true.
Cheers Jason

Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
I assume you've already moved the front diff forward to increase the approach angle and it's still not enough? That was the next mod I was going to make to the RedRat and it's a helluva lot easier than a midmount winch by the look of the pics (some tricky work and some hours gone into the pulley setups by the looks of it). Just a thought.
Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
Heres the pics from my old beater hilux. It originally had a pulley to go from the rear x member to the winch but it kept jumping off so slapped a snatch block in there instead. Distance from the pulley to the winch was always a little short and it never would on that well but it wasnt that bad. Just played up on long winches (you would have to get out and pull the cable over slightly.

How do you find the winch speed, especially under load, with all the rollers?
Thanks for help with the linky thing Ke70!!!

indubitably
Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
If this is the one that was featured in 4wd Action or was it monthly back then......anyway,
I believe that the single coil was to carry the load and it had a PTO box hooked to the diff housings to force it to flex.....and the way it was setup, had minimal body roll for onroad, but looking at the tyres, it was never intended for that.
Absolute engineering marvel!!!!
There was a diagram that 4wd action/monthly (lol) used to depict this, but I can't seem to find it. If anyone has anything like the diagram or pics to explain, maybe that would make it easier understand.
Cheers, Dano.

Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
Pretty much as above - the landie has "forced articulation" - the F+R axles are linked via shafts and a PTO drive, so if one axle flexes the other flexes the opposite way. This also means it has basically no body roll, so Bill's original plan was to only run a single coil at the rear for extra articulation, however it had to be changed to twin coils for engineering.De-lux wrote:Bush65 wrote:This pic shows how the winch was mounted in Nigels landie, and the routing of the rope.ISUZUROVER wrote:Bill / Portalrover /Daddylonglegs (can't remember username) posted up pics of a landie he built with a centre mounted hi-mount. No worries mate, i stuck some more pics on there today showing the linkage i made to remotely actuate the freespool.
The winch speed does not change despite the multiple pulleys involved in routing the rope to the front. Speed is halved when doing a rear winch.
I hope it works out for ya.
Re: Mid Mount Winch....Whos got one??? any info???
Plus it has VW torsion bar suspension used as a sway bar - can be seen in the pic.ISUZUROVER wrote:.....

The hybrid landie was built on a rangie chassis, and rangies of that era had a load leveller where that centre coil is and light coils outboard of the chassis. The load leveller was modified to use the coils.

Hey mate, just looking through some of your pics, and noticed that you ran the cable through the chassis. How do you find this works? Does it rub on the chassis much or have you got around that another way?
