New MQ/Locking hubs
New MQ/Locking hubs
Hey guys just bought a sweet as mq lwb patrol . One owner stock as a rock sd33 with 150k on the clock. What it hasnt got is thoses locking hubs i think they are called, most four wheel drives have them, even my last mq had them but this car doesnt. What gives?? I had a look in the arb catalogue and they had something called amv hubs or something like that.
Is that what i need??
Is it necessary to have them???
Will start modding soon but gotta save the dollars first
Cheers
Marc

I find this to be very odd as all MQ's came out with locking hubs.
Is there anywhere on the dash that says 'centre diff lock' or if ya look under the car is there anything that looks like a diff in the front part of the driveline??
Other than that it must have been modified for some silly reason.......

Im pretty sure that some MQ's came with auto locking hubs, be aware, that they do tend to play up a bit, knew a bloke with them, and he found out they were rooted to hard way, on a fairly steep hill, couldnt get up, hit reverse and they unlocked on him, sending him down the hill with pace,
to save the misfortune, replace them with manual locking ones, it can never hurt to get out and lock them.

I think you'll find that the front hubs are permanently locked.
This means all you have to do is put the transfer case into 4WD and you're set.
There's nothing wrong with this set-up, it's less hassle than getting out and locking the wheels anyway. The theoretical penalty is that it causes slightly more wear to the front half of the drivetrain (no big deal) and costs you a bit of fuel economy (from turning more metal bits... also no big deal.)
You could put manual hubs on but why bother? There are people who will tell you that you shouldn't drive on the road with the front hubs locked because of "wind up" but this is just a common misconception.*
Of course, I am *assuming* you've got permanently locked hubs. You can easily test this by jacking the front up and turning the wheels by hand. If the attached driveshaft turns as well, then they are locked. If it doesn't, then there's something else going on and I have just misled you
I doubt they'd be auto locking.

*what you shouldn't do is drive on bitumen with both front hubs locked AND the transfer case in 4WD... unless you have a centre diff, which you don't.

mq
that is correct you will probably find it is the european mq with the island transfer(maybe), rear barn doors and The huge rear diff with 37 spline axles. Some of them had no free wheeling hubs. and deffinatelly not constant 4wd or centre diff lock c'mon boys we are talking about an old mq, tuff as nails, kick asse 4x4. not a girly pants toyotaberazafi wrote:I was reading through the arb catalog and they sell free wheeling hubs for mqs they say that some models came with only perminant drive from diff to wheels
Yeh they definatly wouldnt be auto locking, that bit of technology is beyong there time. But they very well be constantly locked. As chimpboy said just jack her up and test it out. or u could drive and gte someone watch under nieth if the front driveshaft is moving.
More wear is correct, but no damage will come of it unless u drive on the road in high or low 4. stayin 2 when on the road.

One thing is for sure i missed my diesel
Marc
In the ARB catalogue it said the avm hubs where 250 bucks, anyone know wehter that would be for both??
Just curious.

The turbo deisel MK's had auto hubs in the delux models. They were crap & rarely seen thes days as the had a bad habit of unlocking at the most unopportune moments
A lot of 4WD Mitsubishis had them as wall, bit of a fad in the mid Eighties.

i thought i had seen the autos somewhere before........
it will give you the ability tolock them and unlock them, just in case you want to run 2 wheel drive in low range, you just leave em unlocked, where as you cant do this now,
its upto you really, i like to have it in low range when reversing trailers, as it gives a more controlled reverse other than using the clutch all the time......

Shark wrote:So as hard core fourwheel driving wont be for about six months should i just leave them as is??
Am i really going to benifit from changing them?
There is a benefit, but I gotta say I doubt it's worth even 250 bucks.
If you leave it you'll probably eventually find some for next to nothing. I'd wait until then.
