miss in my 6g72
i have a triton with the sohc 6g72 and it has a distinct miss. am trying to narrow it down to get it fixed as i think it is majorly effecting my fuel consumption as i only got 340k's off 1 tank (was taking it easy changing at 2500 rpm)
any thoughts as to what it could be and how to fix it ?
i was thinking it could be a burnt out valve but i don't know too much about engines which is why im here so please help as all input will be greatly appreciated.

Re: miss in my 6g72
I was hoping that some of the gurus on this site would have come in by now, but no - they must be asleep.
A bit more information may assist in diagnosis. Is the miss always there or does it only appear at odd times eg when you are accelerating, turning corners, at idle etc? If it there always, it may be something as simple as an ignition lead or spark plug.
Firstly, check all the plugs and leads. If it is a 6g72, I assume that you can get to all the plugs and leads I have a 6G74 and to do this is a major dismantle of the top of the engine. Examine all the plugs - do they all look the same. If so, you probably have troubles somewhere else, but if one looks sooty or cagged up, then the troubles are in that cylinder and you should then look at the leads to cehck for continuity.
Do this and then report back. The gurus can then assist with diagnosis with better information.

Re: miss in my 6g72
thanks for the offer mate but if im gonna put a different engine in im gonna go bigger v6 conversions have a kit for me but are yet to reply what engine it would be for.
however i finally managed to get the time to check the plugs one was a bit fouled up upon starting the engine and taking the lead off it there was no change so i have just got some more plugs for it and will see if it helps let you all know tomorrow

Re: miss in my 6g72
If changing the plug doesn't alter it, make sure you try changing the lead also. Test the resistance along the lead with a ohmmeter, less resistance = good

Re: miss in my 6g72
good idea thanks mate
Re: miss in my 6g72
just ducked home from work to see if it helped and its running much smoother with new plug but could hear spark jumping put my hand on the dizzy and then moved it of rather fast turns out the lead from the coil to the dizzy was jumping to the lead that ran to the fouled plug so have just got a replacement through a mate and will see if it works tonight
Re: miss in my 6g72
bakerboy just herd back from the conversion guys and it will be for the vs to vy comm engine so hope that includes the gen3 5.7l v8 with the 6sp box will be a huge job but will be very satisfying when i have the end result
Re: miss in my 6g72
To find the short, just run the vehicle at night in a dark area. Open the bonnet then have a look. If you have a jumping arc then it looks really cool!!!

Re: miss in my 6g72
yeah that would look cool and i could have used that advice b4 i lust put my finger in the leads till i got the strongest zap and found that where the coil to dizzy lead went into the dizzy was the strongest so will see tonight after training.
hope its as simple a that will be a bit of a relief

Re: miss in my 6g72
If you are getting zapped by the HT leads, it sounds as if you need to replace all the leads. Whilst you are at it, you may as well look at the distributor cap as well - it sounds as if there is a high resistance somewhwere inside the cap. Maybe the rotor, maybe inside the cap itself?
Why not put in a complete set of spark plugs, leads as well. It is a lot cheaper than replacing the whole engine.
