Are regular clutches really that bad?
I need to buy a new clutch for a GQ Patrol. It has done around 300,000kms on what I presume is the factory clutch.
I have been quoted on a PBR clutch and a heavy duty of which I cannot remember the name. I'm told the PBR has a higher load rating then its OME counterpart.
So I guess my question is, has anyone out there ever replaced their clutch with non-heavy duty and regretted it down the track. ie, within a few years of replacing it?
I can't see myself ever running anything bigger then 33"s and I don't do any heavy towing.

I run standard clutch on 33s in a gq diesel non turbo, never had any problem and im not kind to it. Holds fine under full noise low range and have slid wheels in high range 2 wheel drive.

I've only every used standard clutches. There's no point to a heavy duty clutch with a standard engine. If you're going through clutches prematurely then you are doing something wrong.

mine is presumed a standard, i make roughly 100rwkw, on 35s, and just last week my ute was weighing in at probably 6 tonne with the trailer i had on plus what i had on the back, and i had to slip the clutch to get the bastard up and moving and it still didnt over heat or have any dramas.
but as i said, presumed standard, no record of it being changed, but i bought my ute with absolutely no history provided...

I am running a $310 10% more clamping pressure than standard clutch in my turbo GQ motor in my GU and have done over 20 000km,s to the cape and back towing with no problems at all. I guess time will tell.

im running a sefari tuff clutch in my turbo td42 gq. for the little bit extra in price i would rather have something a lot heavier duty. specially when ya offroad with bigger tires.
gq/gu being hydrulic clutch, even when u put a heavier clutch in, the pedal isnt that heavy. if anthing it has a better feel. IMO

i have a GQ with 33's on it, its a turbo RB30, i have read about people who say they keep going through clutches on this model.
and i give mine heaps, its still the standard cluch with 230,000kms on it, and it seems to feel fine and has never sliped.
as oldmate said, they should last.
unless your doing 6500rpm launches at the lights on 37's, the standard should be fine.
just weigh up the price, if heavy duty is only a bit more in price than the stock one, and it will clamp a few 100kg more? i'd buy heavy duty.
but if the wife is the regular driver, just go the stock.

The new 3 litre gu utes are probably the exception. I have heard of people going through clutches when loaded up (and they are rated at 3.5 tonne). but that's poor design in my opinion. Too high gearing, not enough low end torque combined with turbo lag.
If i were in that situation i'd be looking at regearing the diffs, opposed to fitting a hd clutch.

Standard replacement vs factory is not the same, Factory stuff is usually very very good. "Standard" replacement part unless ex fcatory will rarely measure up ..
I would go for a decent brand name slightly heavier unit and call it good .. you dont need to drop the $$ on the super duty gear.
