Is the Lexus LX470 the same as 100 series Landcruiser?

Post by PLAU »

Hi

I just bought a 100 series GXV and was curious as to if the Lexus LX470 is the same car mechanically but just has more luxury?

Please someone tell me I have done the right thing lol ;)

From my brief research, it seems to have the same specs, but is much more luxurious with more leather and woodgrain and fridge and EBD and electric seats etc

Any advantages/disadvantages?

I want to fit a proper tow kit and bullbar - same in that way?

IS one better then the other? (for towing and 4x4)

I am guessing the suspension etc is the same?

I am also assuming the parts would be the same, as in if someone went to fix an LX470, they could order landcruiser parts and they would be the same?

If they are the same, then I guess they would both be good workhorses. Just wish I got all the extra luxury now? - Buyers remorse? lol

I guess though, the Landcruiser looks more like a real 4x4 to me, and I also guess the less electronics such as seats is better for a workhorse reliability. I also assume the cost of fixing a panel/light that is different to the landcruiser would be a lot dearer on the lexus.......

Thanks
Phil

Yeah they are virtually the same vehicle, the main difference between them is the LX470 has AHC Hydraulic suspension, which, if you wanted to put a bit of a lift in your car would make it slightly more difficult. I've read stories of blokes in the states that have had to pull the whole system out to put longer shocks in and all that.
The 100 weighs a bit less due to less electronics and stuff but its probly not noticeable.

I think if you're looking to do a bit of 4x4ing then the 100 was a better choice :)

Thanks for the answer. Grateful

Anyone else know any differences other then that

I guess i am really after some more people to tell me I did the right thing hehe  (and why the LC is better then lexus)

I think its a mild case of buyers remorse when I saw the nice leather electic seats for comfort (for towing long hauls on bitumen 1000km plus) :?

I will be doing the suspension so I guess LC better for that.

Thanks

Same thing pretty much, you can swap out the adjustable suspension in a Lexus to normal stuff without any dramas. Apart from that they are just a Sahara really

I have two LX470's. they are the same basic car as a LX470, even the AHC was available on the GXV as an option. Probably like comparing a "Berlina" Commodore to a Calais. Better options than a GXL (much nicer seat material, rear aircon - not like Sahara though, and some other nicities) but lesser than an LX470.

I would happily own a GXV (I have a rollover 2000 GXV Turbo Diesel actually, so strickly speaking I do have one....). I think you made a fine decision - but guess that depends on what you spent on it.

The LX470 has every option available and a bit (lot) more luxurious - heaps of electronic stuff which is nice to have if you like electric seats, auto anti glare in mirrors (side and rear view), heated side mirrors etc etc. The Sahara's had pretty much everything the LX470, but AHC was still an option, no woodgrain in doors, no HID lights, lesser quality stereo and reportedly less sound damping but I doubt it. Mine are as quiet as, but I will know for sure when I finish the turbo diesel conversion and then the sound deadening thing will be revealed or not.

Doesnt really sound like alot of extras, but up to mid 2002 when the Sahara came out, it was a fair jump in luxury over a LC.

AHC, anti dive under brakes and active stability control is excellent - drives like a car, but expensive to fix when it goes wrong. being Toyota it is reliable, but does need repair eventually. I will be exploring the suspension options on mine shortly, but the AHC is a great drive and I would like to keep it after having it for 2 years.

If I was really serious about the best off road/luxury combo I would buy an auto HZJ100 and fit the LX470 interior and a Duramax LOL. The thing I just discovered I HATE about the IFS is that there is no room for a 4" exhaust due to the torsion bar fasteners being close to the gearbox.......

Thanks and very grateful for your input.

Is the lexus exactly the same capabilities offroad and towing? (see below - once you change suspension)

I am looking on redbook (I know its not always accurate) and it says the GXV has centre diff and diff locks.

I dont know much but I am assuming the Lexus has this too LOL LOL :D

I guess another thing Id like to know is if you were going to go offroad with one and didnt like the AHC and you were prepared to pay $$ and rip out all the lexus suspension and put the specialised suspension you want in it, then would they be the same offroad and towing as each other or would you mess with some part of the Lexus system? Just more luxury?

I am only asking as I really do feel the luxury (not the suspension) but all the other small things like the extra woodgrain and leather seats and electric with memory (for wife and I), the centre fridge, and auto anti glare and/or fogging, EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) add up to a lot when its used constantly on long hauls.

What is brake assist?

Thinking of selling this now and going the lexus......

Unless there is a disadvantage. Are there any disadvantages of the Lexus? Will just anyone work on them? (I can probably do most myself but curious) Are they dearer to run general maintenance wise?

Does one have an advantage over the other besides the luxury?

Decent bullbars, tow bars same price?

Another thing I guess is I wonder why the Lexus is actually for sale cheaper for the same year then the LC GXV when they have more features and were overt $25k more new then the LC?

Thanks - grateful of your time

Is the lexus exactly the same capabilities offroad and towing? (see below - once you change suspension) - As far as I know yes

I am looking on redbook (I know its not always accurate) and it says the GXV has centre diff and diff locks. - I think they were an option

I dont know much but I am assuming the Lexus has this too LOL LOL :D - up to the 2003 update from what I've seen

- The GF's Dad swapped his to "normal" suspension and it drove the same as before the AHC crapped itself also has since been to Kedron Lexus in Brissie and was told the only thing it will affect is the light on the dash, it will keep flashing, but doesn't actually affect any of the systems. As for the other stuff I can't see why it wouldn't be the same as any other 100series with the same suspension

- we drove from Gympie to Emerald (about 720km each way) in it was very comfy and was good to drive, I drove from Marmor to Dingo (190km) on the way up and from Dingo to Gin Gin (410KM) on the way back and would have no dramas doing a long trip in it again, either driving or as a passenger

Unless there is a disadvantage. Are there any disadvantages of the Lexus? Will just anyone work on them? (I can probably do most myself but curious) Are they dearer to run general maintenance wise? - The GF's dad was looking at the GXV as well as the LX470 he chose the Lexus mainly do to the extra level of luxury, and he picked up an 03 with the dash update at the right price. There are a few things that may need to be done by Lexus themselves but most of the stuff is the same as a LC and most mechnics would be able to do the work on it

Does one have an advantage over the other besides the luxury? - apart from the luxury in a Lexus I can't see any, although the 03 onwards has an indash sat nav/touchscreen controls. But if you were going to be towing heavy loads alot I wouldn't do it with the AHC still in the Lexus

Decent bullbars, tow bars same price? - from what I heard today there isn't to many bullbars available anymore for the Lexus due to all the airbags but most have compliant bullbars already fitted, at least the ones we looked at when the GF's Dad was searching did

Another thing I guess is I wonder why the Lexus is actually for sale cheaper for the same year then the LC GXV when they have more features and were overt $25k more new then the LC? - that one I don't know, maybe the same reason Statemans/Caprices don't hold their value when compare to the same year model commodore

Thanks matey

I guess i cant see any reason then to sell the LC and go the Lexus then.

I am more referring to the LX470 1998-2001 - incase that makes a difference

I guess one last questionj :) - on car sales there are the 98-01 Lexus - series 100 and also series UZJ100R - any differences? (forget that I guess - I just potted a lot of differences in the two with the UJZ100R being a lot better - correct me if I am wrong though)

I guess I am looking at the UZJ100R LX470 Lexus

Bit of a muck around but I think it will be worth it.

I think it would be stupid to try to change all the seats and woodgrain inserts etc etc into the GXV as it would cost more then just buying the Lexus.

One thing I cant find is does the LX470 have centre diff lock and Diff locks available factory option or standard as the LC does? (they are two different things arnt they?)

So what was the update besides dash on the 03?

I really thank you for the info.

The 98-01 lexus did have diff locks as far as I know the few we looked out did and one of the Guys at work has a 99 with factory front and rear, and I think centre. The later ones didn't have them from what I recall

So what was the update besides dash on the 03?

17 inch wheels aswell not sure what else

Thanks

Two last questions please is if a Lexus doesnt have the Diff locks on it, can I still buy from dealer or aftermarket now and fit?

The centre diff is inside the cabin on both vehicles, that ok.
But I am curious as to when they say in an advert, centre diff lock AND "Diff Locks also", are these electronic or manual? Are they all the same thing or seperate?

Thanks

The diffs are the same as a 100 series so the factory diff locks are the electronic type but you can obviously use aftermarket lockers if there is none fitted from factory

All have centre diff locks. I have a 99 with diff lock in rear and a 2000 without. As far as I know, front diff locks were not an option.

There is no question that you should pay more for an LX470. But they can be found cheap!

They had to be. One of the guys at work has an early one, 99 I think, and it has a front diff lock as well as a rear and centre

I am happy to hear it was an option that you have seen, but every time I have looked I have only ever seen a 100 series with a rear factory diff loock. To the point that I bought a diff lock switch from a 80 series that has both front and rear with the intent of fitting an air locker for the front and using the factory switch for it. I havent installed it all yet. None of the manuals I have seen say anything about a front diff lock either.

The 80 series switch fits the same hole in dash - plug is all different of course.

I am not saying I dont believe you, just that I am suprised by it.

I'm positive he said front and rear, unless he meant the centre as a front. I'll check with him tomorrow

Thanks everyone

Lexus it is! I have one lined up at a very good price.

It just comes down to pleasing the wife, me and we have 3 kids so I guess the more luxury the better (or maybe not with kids lol)

I re read the wiring diagram and there is wiring for a front diff lock - well I'll be darned! Still, I need to see a photo because I have looked and looked and never seen one. Live axel front - yep I get that, but IFS.... thats where I have my doubts.

Does someone know if the actual diff centre in the IFS is the same as in the Live axel?? I heard it mentioned that they run the same 8" diff centre.....

Well I got rid of the LC and picked up a nice Lexus LX470 a few days ago and after doing some driving around I love it!!

Seems to have all the same reliability of the Toyota (as thats what it is I guess) but has all the bells and whistles and luxury to keep the wife and kids happy on long drives!

Love it but might change the suspension - it feels a little saggy! Apart from that it is great.

Very happy :D

Thanks for everyones help! ;)

Correct! No IFS Landcruiser has had a front diff lock as a factory option.

Not sure about the cruiser but the Lexus did have the option for a front
