Gearbox sticking in 3rd

Post by daniel7000 »

Every now and then my gbox gets stuck in third gear and it's very hard to pull out. Someone told me the synchro was shot.
I would have thought if the synchro was gone it would make it hard to get into gear not getting it out of gear.

Any ideas?

86 Troopy.

Thanks.

could be a syncro or could be in the linkages. Time for a rebuild. Given how old they are now you could probably get a used box from a wreckers pretty cheap.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.

Fix it (or replace it) before it stays in third. Not fun driving in traffic starting in low range and grinding into high range. Although that was a 4 speed in a 45 series ( I replaced it with a 75 series fiver). I would assume it will end the same for you in time.

Thanks for the replys. Today I dropped the box out and took off the top. Was rushed for time so just had a quick look. The brass syncros look rooted on the third gear syncro.
Will pull out shaft and inspect them properly when I get the time. The gears all look like new. Anyone know the best place to get parts for these boxes?

Thanks

Try your local bearing joints, CBC or something.
