Post by LucasGQ »

change of plans, nolonger going straight gas turbo conversion on my TB42 any more been talked into going TD42 and turbo that.
just wondering how much power i can get out of the TD42 with turbo and only screwing up the fuel on the standard injector pump and whats the max boost that i could run with this set up?
i have no idea bout the diesle side of things so any help would be great. :?

Around 15psi should see the maximum capacity of the fuel pump to keep up.
Make sure you fit an EGT gauge (if you don't have one already).
Obviously a good intercooler will help (look at the laminova setup).

From there it all depends on how much cash you can spend

Just fuel up, boost up and intercooler should see 120kw maybe a bit more?

I'm sure the specialists will comment on this with more detailed infos.

I'm pretty sure the stock pumps (no compensator) on GQ's can only support up to 100-110rwkw, thats going of Ben's TD42 with Laminova and BB turbo i think.

Oh, yeah, I was talking about a GU turbo, GQ might be a bit less.

The rule of thumb is 100rwkw from a GQ and 130rwkw from the GU and thats abour all you will get out of the stock pumps.

My old Gq was running a high mount bb turbo, PWR water to air intercooler with the pump maxed out running 15psi and got 146rwHP on 33's. No idea what that is in KW's??

hi guys
thanks for the info, i just spoke to rankin diesel in bayswater to get an idea of figures and he said turning up the screw on standard pump with turbo is not a good idea as it will put in to much fuel till it hits boost? also said to do it right i would need to put a boost compensator on with bigger injectors and it would fly once done right.
is it safe to just turn the pump up or is he just trying to get some business out of me?

Not really an issue unless it gets turned up a shitload. More fuel=more exhaust gas/heat which will bring boost on sooner. Ovbiously too much fuel will end up with clouds of soot, excessive consumption and high EGT's.

Crap. Good quality reconditioned injectors are all that you need. To be honest, i can't say i've seen/heard of high flow injectors for the TD42, but have heard of people playing with crack pressures. And the boost compesator isn't needed either, however it will give a smoother delivery of fuel (in line with boost pressure). There are PLENTY of turbo diesels getting around without aneroids, just FYI.

It is, but just fit up a pyro so you actually KNOW its safe, rather than guessing or taking someone elses advice.

bigger injectors is a load of shit.. i have 150cc running through my pump and the injectors are doing a bloody fine job. i know that cos i got them recently checked.

How much power do you want to make? Max boost is really determined by turbo choice and ultimate power output. To go from a 50rwkw std td42 to fitting an off the shelf kit will gain 30-40% more power, with out the need for a boost comp and anything else. Ask for more and smoke becomes an issue. Its then all about compromise.

Fitting a boost comp allows for 3 stages of fuel delivery tuning. The pump needs to be removed to do so. Larger injectors are a falicy unless you use totally different units. These are only needed for 175rwkw plus.

Time to make some basic plans, which makes the upgrade path one that can be done properly, once only without spending money needlessly.

As I said earlier. I had my pump maxed out. No compensator. Didn't need it! The only time it let out smoke was if you were to drop the clutch and give it a shit load
Make sure you got a quality pyro and keep an eye on it. The only time I ever had a exhaust temp rise was loading it up low in the rev range while towing my camper on long hills. (Only ever got to about 550 deg and dropped on the downside of the hill).
Don't be soft. Wind it up. Just keep in mind the age and km's on your engine and be sensible about it. Even 12-14 pounds with a decent cooler will see happy days for years.

Midget,

I have a GQ Y60 4.2D, that has a Safari Turbo & Inter Cooler system fitted. From Safari's site they confirm that power would be at 140kW and Torue at 430Nm. On the dyno my results are 92Kw and 370 Nm on the wheels.

System has been on for 300k k m and I limit my EGT to a max on 600 C.

Regards

You should be able to get 140 rwkw out of a stock pump if tuned correctly

i've got a stock pump just turned up, AXT turbo, no intercooler and get 90rwkw and that's down a bit from what it was getting on dyno when it was first tuned after fitting the turbo.
gq with stuff
