Ebay engine rebuild kit for a 3l 2.8d hilux (now with pics )

Post by davenmarcia »

Hi guys I'm after opinions on ebay engine rebuild kits for a 2.8 3l hilux engine the current engine i'm looking at rebuilding was out of a 4runner that i got for parts etc at a salvage auction so I do not know its history except it had a new timing belt done 2000kms ago it has a denco turbo on it and done 257000kms it ran fine but thought while it was out should i rebuild it.? I will have the help of a deisel mechanic .

Is there a difference in these 2 kits

If it aint broke, don't go fixing it!
Use the money for something else, does it use oil?
make a ticking noise?
Lack power?
Have bad blowby or low compression?
Also if you wanted to go oversize, you have to send the block away to get bored out as they have no linings.
If its just glazed cylinders, hone and re-ring it then.

Also they would had been chinese kits.
Call SMS diesel at lidcombe, they sell japanese kits which are basically genuine and also chinese ones, are cheaper than those on ebay as well.

Hi all
the engine did run fine and no obvious noises seemed to have normal power. However it does have an oil leak down the passenger side under the intake manifold so figured to fix that up i will pull half the motor apart and may aswell do a rebuild. but will let my mate check it out first before the big decision.

front leak is the timing cover gasket.
Rear leak may be manifold gasket, due to blowby?
Or leaking head gasket?

Had a friend have a look and first thing he spotted was a missing bolt from the inlet manifold ( how blind am I ) and this combined with a bit of blowby is creating the leak. He suggests to either rebuild or just do a gasket kit. So it looks like I will be getting to know the 3l internals very closely.......... He also says to buy the parts thru him.
