Precleaner on GU factory snorkel?

Post by chunks »

Has anyone here got a precleaner to replace the factory ram head on their GU snorkel? I was wanting to fit one for outback touring but not sure what size etc would be best? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Are you talking about a Donaldson pre-cleaner, If so I use a 10" one on my 4.2 GU but a 3lt would only need a 7" one.

You may possibly be right about that ...BUT..
I have a GQ RD 28 and I had fitted an 8" precleaner , but after a while of wondering why it wouldnt rev cleanly past 3200 revs (and blowing lots of smoke as well at these revs...I twigged that the precleaner was strangling it.
So I fitted the 10" one ...and it goes heaps better at higher revs...no smoke to speak of....and seems better on fuel as well. I would never have twigged to it at all....except I busted the bowl ...and had to drive around for a cuppla days without it....and it went heaps better without bowl.
Strange one ...but that is/was the case.
So check it out with the 3 litre...just might also be the case.
HTH.

Cheers Keith

Yeah, I originally had an 8" one and it sounded like it was sucking air through a straw, so changed to the 10" one. Don't know if the 4 Pot would suck as hard as the 6 pot ones.

I read that these pre cleaners are not suitable for speeds over 80kmh due to the way the air is directed through them, anyone had any problems with this? Sooty where did you get that adapter from?

Mine came from ARB, Maybe cheaper to buy the lot direct from Donaldson.

Uni Filter do an oiled sock type filter that fits down inside both Airtec (ie Nissan) and Safari snorkels. Collected heaps of dust and gunk and reduces visible air filter contamination by heaps.
