opinions on suspension set up
i am about to start building my lux up for comps and weekend duties so i was just wondering what all the hilux guys out there think of this set up as a comp/ weekend hardcore trip set up will be running 37's most of the time but also occasionally 35's
front:
3in flex springs from locktup
5.5 in greasable shackles
crossover steering possibly with hydro assist
dropped hanger 1in
12 or 14in shock hoops with either bilstein or rancho long travel shocks (opinions on which is better for hoop size and also shocks please)
u bolt flip kit
5.29 diff raatios
also what do i need to do to move the front diff forward?
rear:

buds customs 200mm shackles
inverted shocks
rancho long travel shocks or bilsteins (again opinions on the better of the two please)

would love to here any opinions and sugestions etc

i dont really want to go RUF and IFS rears as i need the car to be road registered and even though it is still going to be a pain in the arse with this set up i at least can get it engineered as long as the work is all done properly (i am upgrading the front and rear brakes etc to allow for the bigger tryes and everything else) where as with the RUF and IFS rears i cant get it engineered or pass RWC for rego

No rego with hydro assist. Why not 4 link the rear??

hate to tell u bud but ruf and ifs setup and a locktup set up invole the same work infact from what locktup have told me its more work in the rear as both front spring location and shackle points have to be moved in terms of shocks go with what you can afford as you will kill them at some point atleast thats the way i see it al low speed i can see a huge advantage of expensive shocks but on the road they should be more stable if they are correctly valved just my 2 cents i will be going a set of locktup rears in mine soon as i have ruf and ifs and the ifs just dont cut it

If your looking at getting the Locktup gear just buy there front & rear kit will have everything you need plus a bit more.
Also use the Bilstien shocks they are 100% better than the Ranchos

It doesnt matter whether you go RUF/IFS rears, or just Locktup springs, extended shackles are still illegal and as far as I know, cant be engineered.
Id go with the Bilsteins, and with the Locktup kit.
It would save alot of time, money and hassles trying to buy everything separately.
And go Hi-steer as well.

go surf rear coil setup then throw away the hilux front diff then put a 3 link setup in along with the trusty gq front diff

well either leaf spring set up will work, go high steer instead of cross over, twin lockers, longfeilds and transfer gears or duels, leave the diffs as what ever ratio they are and some decent bar work

be ware that 5.29 gears are weaker than 4.88's.
and seriously, suspension is entirely up to you and what you want the car to do, what you can afford, and what your engineer will allow. there are a thousand different opinions on this website and to be quite honest, you cant really class any of them as wrong, although they are opinions and there are few people who have tried everything and can honestly give a well educated view on what will suit you.
do you want coils? do you want to stay leaves? do you want cheap or expensive? coils do work well and are pretty brainless to get them to flex good. leaves work well also, but a lot of guys do not understand how they work or how to set them up to work as good as they can. short of coilovers and very extensiveley modified coil setups, leaves can match them for flex, if set up right. but flex is not everything.
coils are easy to engineer, and require you to deviate less from the standard setup to achieve what you want than leaves do.
if you go for leaves though, you can have the same wheel travel, and spend less, than a coil conversion that will also work well. for example my suspension with high steer can be done for just over 2 grand and thats including steering and brake lines. but it may not be as legal as you desire.
dual cases in my mind are a must. and it is also a personal thing as to what diff you run, you can build a toyota to be strong like a built nissan, for similar or less costs incurred. dont bother with gq diffs, if you are gonna do it do it properly, pay the 3000 to 3500 bucks and get gu diffs, the cv's are stronger. or run 60 series diffs, aftermarket axles and longfields and your looking at 3 grand for the diffs, axles and longs and the gears you want. ready to go.

If your set on the locktup gear give them a call Chris will fill you in on all the options and he's great to deal with...
But in my experience coils are better then leaves but the kits they do are really good in either for luxs.

its only true when using factory ratios but then the 5.29 only came out in hi ace vans that im aware of, the weakest diff ratio that came out in a hilux is 4.88 the R&P are alot thinner than the other ratios, when going after market such as nitro gears the 5.29s are the way to go they will be alot softer on ur transfercase inputs and outputs when running larger rubber.Zuri92 wrote:be ware that 5.29 gears are weaker than 4.88's.

touching on what johnsy said, my old 4.88 factory rear diff centre is still alive after i wheeled on it for a few years and it is now in wood, butchers surf and he is running a 1uz. my comment regarding diff gear strength was based on what i have been told and have read.
