Vibrations when engine braking

Post by bagginsoftheshire »

Hey Guys I have an 89 4runner. When driving particulary at llower speeds around 40km/h the car vibrates. It is worst when deccelerating using engine braking.

Have checked Uni joints and they are fine.

Someone suggested maybe engine mounts. If so how do i check engine mounts.

All help is greatly appreciated.

I would suspect the rear diff, particually the pinion bearings.

I had this in a hilux but it was a lost bolt on the gearbox mount.

Ive had this before just after a had a new engine put in, turned out to be a combination of the uni joints being the worst of it, and that my front diffs were still locked in. Also engine mounts my uncle had problems with in his extrail after bumpy beach 4x4ing and that made it run incredibly bad...

maybe also try wheel bearings aswell... I know they have semi floating hubs and they are different to landcruisers but it maybe something you can rule out...

Both a mate and i have had this vibration through our cruisers and weve replaced uni's and checked our pinion shaft bearings and that but yeah turned out being wheel bearings, it did the same as yours... Vibrating at low speeds and worse on deceleration/engine braking

ours are all sweet now so it could be something to check and possibly rule out.

Hope it helps mate...
I mean, a turbo is great and all, but i'd rather be blown...

Thanks for the help guys. Has been resolved. Turns out it was the uni joints there was no play when i checked them first, I think they must have bound up. Woops.
All good now thanks again Outers.
