When A hilux CV breaks what part of it usually breaks ?
Hi Guys,
Hear that breaking CV's can happen pretty often with LockRites in the front, I just got one for 200 bucks off a mate and was wondering what part generally breaks in the cv when they do actually break,
Cheers

The CV itself, the big ball looking thing that sits between the two axles.
\m/
I just pulled 1 out of my mates 60 yesterday out at Newnes. The inner cage exploded and the balls jammed up the steering. The outer part of the CV stayed intact, just scared heavily.

Im here for the sausage!
I drive a landcruiser but I beleive the CVs are the same as Lux CVs. I broke many CVs with the old auto locker (lock rite). All but one of the them the bell has cracked, but the other one the inners cage broke, bell still intact. Another common thing is the stub axel snapping.
Tip with the lock rite: Be very carful in reverse, and try your best to have the steering as straight as possable when reversing.

Its not a bundy!
Re: When A hilux CV breaks what part of it usually breaks ?
hey guys
i just recently got a hilux and want to know how to take care of them to a point without being to soft on them or if there is a cure . also is there a way to change them that is easiest for you guys ive never done one before and would like to practice. was thinking of lashing out on some dirty 30s but also could just get 2 sets from the wreckers for under 200.
the truck is lock f+r with dual transfers and 36 simex ET2 so i know im goning to break them

For easy change, I'll try to get it right, but others will have more experience...
When I did mine, I seperated the inner axle from the cv joint. On the axle spline where it meets the diff, there was a clear wear mar on the teeth. I held a small piece of angle on that wear mark and put a couple of small tack welds in the spline and snappd the angle off. Then I filed the small welds down so it wasn't proud of the spline.
As fas as I know, that wweld stopped the axle from moving any further into the diff centre and I didn't have to put the inner circlip on the axle inside the cv. May be right, I can't remember, but after I did this, it didn't cause me any drama's anyway.
This way , when you break a cv, you are able to undo the king pin bolts and slide the whole knuckle off in one piece.

Go the 30 spline upgrade longfields or dirty 30's my pick is the first of the 2. Yeah you can buy the cv end for 70 or so dollars new. Its a mega pain in the arse out wheeling in the rain or at night and you bust a cv. Then have to pull it out on the side of the track so you can drive home because a broken part of the cv has jamed the nuckle. You can't turn it or can only turn one way been there done that longs were one of the best things i purchased for my hilux. http://locktup4x4.com.au/hilux-solid-front-78/axle-91/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;ranover wrote:hey guys

plenty of parts on the bench
Re: When A hilux CV breaks what part of it usually breaks ?
So you spent all that money on setting the rig up and now skimping on cvs? Dont be tight and get longs, best money I have spent on my 4x4 I reckon, gives you confidence to use the front locker properly on loose shale, rock etc.

100% agree, I run 37's, v8 and locker in the front, I don't even think about my cv's. Get longfields, worth every cent for the peace of mind knowing that I can give it a flogging and I won't have to go pulling down the front axle.

Re: When A hilux CV breaks what part of it usually breaks ?
Give the trail gear cvs a miss, go with longs or track assassins.
Give Chris at Locktup 4x4 a call, the track assassins are really good for their price. Im running them in my 75 series with 40" sticky treps at the moment.
Very happy with how they have held up so far.
