Part time conversion for 100 series
Hi going with advice gained here and something I was thinking of doing to try and get better fuel consumption is the marks adaptors kit to make the car rear wheel drive for on road use is this something that can be done at home or is it a job for the mechanic and is there a noticeable difference in fuel consumption any info would be good thanks.

Everyone i know that has done it has ended up saying the fuel decrease is marginal if any
There is less backlash in the driveline when taking off, gets rid of some clunkiness etc.
the only people who truly value the conversion is people with big lifts and very bad front driveshaft angless (105 or 80 cruisers)
if you have a 100series i think your wasting your time and money doing it, but thats just my opinion.

No fuel savings, can do it at home but will need access to a press or take that piece to a shop. Will save you heaps on the install if you do it yourself but as said if your 4by is standard for the fuel saving you will get your better off with the safety of full time 4wheel drive.

The fuel savings are immeasurable.
Thrashlux is right about the abs. However the abs will work so long as you have the hubs on the front wheels locked, or just don't install the free wheeling hubs that come with the kit. You can save by not purchasing them at all.
Since you are doing this for the driveline clunk and not front end vibrations there's no reason you can't install the part time without the free wheeling hubs. The AVM hubs that get sold are rubbish anyway.
The handling change isn't that drastic. You will spin the wheels more in the wet, and may oversteer under power in corners in the wet. If you are not 100 percent sure, remove the front drive shaft, lock the center diff and drive it around like that for a few weeks. That will simulate a part time kit with no free wheeling hubs. (abs will still work).
Going full time to part time will require some adjustment to driving behavior, but it's very far from being unsafe.
I don't know what the deal is with the legal side of things. Modifications are normally allowed without certification if the modification matches the setup of a variation of the same model of car. For example base model 100's (technically 105 series) are part time 4wd. It's usually not the case for safety features, but full time 4wd is peddled as a safety feature more by marketing than science. If it were truly a safety advantage then it would be considered essential fitment along side other things like ABS and air bags.

Thanks to all for the info great help and yeah the car is a 105 with no abs didn't no there was much difference between the two any way I will take the front shaft out and see how it goes before spending any money.

once you have made your decision can you let us know your results as so many people think it will make such a big fuel economy difference the more opinions the better

The ABS is not an issue on the IFS 100 series, The pick up is off the rotor not the CV.

Front shaft is now out and the movement from under the car has gone so much nicer to drive I will be doing the part time conversion as soon as I can and if the car gets any better fuel consumption well that will be a bonus. Once I have done the conversion I will post whether I get any better fuel consumption or not for those interested.

I recently did the part time kit on my IFS 100 series, fixed the clunk but no improvement in fuel economy.
I didn't believe that it would anyway but just good to confirm it.
