Transfer case???

Post by hudson44 »

I'm pretty sure my transfer case is knackered. 94 nj 3.0lt manual. I have a loud clunking sound, similar to a loud cv knock, coming from my transfer. It only happens in 4wd and is worse with higher load and turning and i can re-create it in low range taking off in reverse quickly. It sound like the chain is jumping or a gear tooth is missing. It also jumps out of low range on hill descent. Has anyone had these symptoms and if so, was it the transfer case?

Bloody oath..... that's what we built them for isn't it. It hasn't been happy since i drowned it about 18 months ago. Oil gets dirty very quickly, so i've been kind of expecting it. It's a bloody nasty noise though. Had the first trip out on the weekend with the new 33's and i don't think she liked it.

I think the drain on the transfer case is in a silly place, there is no way it can drain all the oil out..... the PTO piece hangs way lower than the bung.
