I am doing some research and need to find out what are common engine swaps for Jeeps.
Need to know what you guys upgrade with and which ones are most effective.

For JK's a commonly available conversion is the fitting of one of the range of Chrysler Hemi V8's.
From my limited knowledge of these swaps.... there are a range of engines and states of tunes and are readily engineered ( if done properly ).

I have seen a few TJ's with Gen 3's, 6 litres etc. There is a XJ with a 5.7 chev in it in WA just done.
The 4.0 six in either XJ's or TJ's takes well to stroking, kits and bits are readily available to take them to 4.7l, 200+kw.
Older rigs (CJ's) have been fitted with everything from AMC V8's to Holdens to Chevs and Ford V8, even Crysler V8's.
With the JK's, Hemi's are the go. Everything is available in US, or here via Pro-Comp / AEV in Melb.

What jeep and drive line currently installed and what engine you think of ??? You can mix and match almost anything on a Jeep so better to start with what you have and your build ideas than a broad question

With a Hemi conversion transmission / transfer and driveline may all be issues depending on state of tune and driver behavoirs.
D60 conversions aren't that uncommon of JK's with stock engines / drivelines as D30's are just adequate for standard use, D44's are a little better but for the potential torque increase of a Hemi
probably better to look at thw D60 path if serious off road use being considered.

Just reading some of your posts and as i want to use the jeep for a tow car i was looking at fitting the turbo 2H diesel from my cruiser. What can of worms would i be opening to fit it and use the jeep auto. cheers. its a 95 cherokee

I think that is what is referred to as going backwards. Less power, no way to engineer due to vintage of the engine.

What are you plannign on towing? We have a XJ that easily tows a 2.5T trailer rig and trailer through the hills and on the flat. THey are rated to 3T but I reckon thats a stretch. The standard 4.0L does the job fine. why you'd want to put a 2H into an XJ is beyond me.

The thing i was worried about was engine temp and fuel usage and comp truck is 1.9t so with the car trailer would be on its 3T limit just that its a good little car to drive

The problem with XJ towing 3T is not the engine
you have a mid size wheel base a small D35 real axle and monoque construction so the trailer ends up steering the XJ
If you want to tow 3 T regularly and want a Jeep then a FSJ is the choice standard with a 360 V8 and plenty of weight to tow well, if you dont want a Jeep then GQ or GU patrol would be my pick
But if it just the odd around the corner to a local track then the XJ will do a great job up to its limit
