Help to ID Turbo
Hey Guys,
I could use your help to identify this turbo.
It was put on by the previous owner and i can only assume it is from one of the big name brand kits.
I cant find a part # or name on it anywhere......pics below
It has started making noise and chewing some oil so its time to be replaced.
I have been recommended to to replace it with an oil and water cooled one. Any thoughts on this?
Also will it be at all possible to buy a replacement turbo that will be a direct fit or am i likely to need to replace the dump pipe?
Cheers for your assistance!
Michael

Re: Help to ID Turbo
No interest in getting it high flowed and/or rebuilt?
What do we want? TIME TRAVEL! When do we want it? THAT'S IRRELEVANT!
Re: Help to ID Turbo
Not to many plain oil cooled turbos around these days. So probably have to look at water cooled mate!
If you liked the way it drove just get that one rebuilt.

I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.
Re: Help to ID Turbo
Looks like a garrett to me, they did oil only turbos for 4wds and the top oil line fitting / flange is the same as what was on my old garrett.
Looks a little on the small size to me?

Re: Help to ID Turbo
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
I would get it rebuilt but have been advised that plain oil cooled isnt ideal for a 4x4 simply because it wont keep as cool during low speed off road work.
Plus from what i can work out if it is at the point that its making noise then chances are the shaft is worn/damaged and a rebuild would be costly.
I would have expected that a garret turbo would of had some form of markings on it? usually on the intake side?
As for a replacement do many turbos use the exhaust type this has? Im used to seeing a bolt on exhaust side, not a clamp style?
Cheers

Re: Help to ID Turbo
Water cooling it's not essential on a diesel engine, the combustion temps are a lot lower than what it's seen in petrol engines
The clamp on the exhaust is called a V band, most Garret turbos are available with V band exhaust housings
If it is making noises, get onto getting it fixed quickly, I left mine too long on my 80series and the turbo blew up and took out the engine too.
Have you got a pic of the cross over pipe from turbo to manifold? It may give a clue as to who made the kit??

Re: Help to ID Turbo
It's T3 style. You'd have to clean it to get a better ID than that.
Every name brand turbo maker has put out T3 style turbos and all knockoff companies too.

Re: Help to ID Turbo
Looks very Garrett in appearance - the oil feed is garrett and the fastening of the comp cover is Garrett as is the flange for the CHRA to the turbine housing. As Dougal said, Garrett has been around for ages so who knows what is inside really.
Garrett apparantly did some replacement turbos for Toyotas some time ago. I note the original heat shrouds appear to be still in place which would suggest that in fact the original exhaust manifold is in place and the flange is in fact Toyota.
Not too many companies are interested in the 80 series turbos these days, its not a big market.
How was the performance prior to its deminse?
Cheers, Graeme

Re: Help to ID Turbo
i was wondering what the concensus was on driving it.....turns out i was correct...dont drive it untill its fixed!
I will get a pick of the intake crossover pipe asap and hopefully that will help.
Graeme,
THe exhasut manifold actually has a bolt adaptor plate between the manifold and the turbo. You can just about make it out if you look at the 1st and 3rd pics.
As for performance it drove fine however i dont have a comparison as its the only large TD car i have driven! Im used to my WRX.........
as a side note it currently only holds about 8psi and used to hold about 11psi when i first got the car.
If i am going to replace the turbo I want to upgrade it to something bigger and better......do you have a suggestion?

Re: Help to ID Turbo
Just an update i decided to bite the bullet and just give the car to a workshop this weekend to replace/upgrade the turbo.
This will be its first time at a mechanic :( usually do everything myself where possible but i dont have the tools to modify the exhaust if i need to to fit a new turbo!
Its going down to A & B Motorsports in Brookvale who have a good wrap from what i have read.
Will keep you posted on the outcome!

Re: Help to ID Turbo - New turbo fitted!!!
Well what a long time coming!
Firstly before i say too much Frank at A & B Auto is a very passionate man who knows his stuff and does quality work.
He does everything with a side of OCD and i cannot fault his workman ship.
He stuck to his quote and commented that he is not the typical workshop who will call you up saying "something came up and it is going to cost $x more". Various things came up with my job but it didnt cost me any more than he originally quoted.
However it did take them 6 weeks to complete the job most of which was spent waiting on parts to arrive which, with a little foresight, should of been avoided.
Anyway onto the work!
So the job was simple......replace the turbo!
After various discussions we decided the best route was to replace it with an oil and water cooled turbo (i realise there are mixed opinions on this but i personally believe it is a massive benefit)
The next issue was that the original turbo could not be identified even once off and in bits so trying to match inlets & outlets was a no-goer.
A turbo was decided on (to be honest i have no idea what it is other than a TD-05) - if any of you can ID THIS turbo that would be great for future reference (and price comparison)
They then set about making all the changes needed to get it into its new home and routing new oil and water lines.
All the fittings, piping, hose etc are top quality and almost too good to be on a dirty 4x4 instead of a race car (as they are intended!)
As for performance it is hard to say as i dont drive the car often enough to get a good feel for it. It is not vastly different to how it drove before however it holds 9PSI well (old turbo used to peak and tail off) and apparently has pleantly of scope to be increased. Also it no longer blows little clouds of smoke when i give it some (presumably because this turbo isnt leaking oil past the seals!). Only got the car back this week so am still to test it offroad and on the freeway!
Onto the show off pics (also sporting my new power steering reservoir project which has just been finished! ):
Any questions just ask!!
