Patrol Engine upgrade.

Post by Pennyponting »

Hi all, my name is Joel, iv got a 1999 4.2diesel GU wagon with 195,000km which i have had for 6years. it has been a great car, never missed a beat, and i have set it up just how i like.

But i am going around Australia again in March, and i wanted it to be reliable, so i started looking at upgrading to a newer motor, i found a 3.0L out of a 2001 patrol with only 91,000km, it was really cheap, and came with the wiring loom and gearbox etc. so i have bought it and started the upgrade. i cant wait to see how it goes. its supposed to have more power than the old 4.2.

My mechanic is charging me enough. . . . struth! nearly $9,000 in labor to fit a motor and gearbox. is this normal? on a positive note he has offered to knock $1,000 off the price of the upgrade, and buy my old motor and gearbox off me. he also says my diff cogs will need to change. but i dont want to change the diffs because iv already got a lokker fitted. . . . . . so i have a few issues.

i would like to know what you guys think, especially those who have upgraded your motor like me, particularly the power. . . . cant wait to drive it.

Would have left it 4.2 more reliable and your being overcharged for an engine swap

I really hope this is a stir up?

The 3L is probably patrol owners worst nightmare. Reliability of this is 1/10th of any TD42.
Cost of getting the TD42 to go 100% better than any 3L would be about 8-10K (which would be considerably less than what it will cost for your planned upgrade)
Add a turbo and intake manifold upgrade and you will get around 80-90% more power and torque on 10-11psi.
Add a good intercooler and that figure will be up at least another 30%, lifting the boost to 13-14psi.
All well within safety margins on a td42.
Turbo $5K, Intercooling $3.5K both as installed prices.

Best thing is it will do 500-600K km's before it kicks the bucket, with the 3L some people are lucky to break the 100K km mark before needing a rebuild.

The absolute worst part of all this is the designated 'Hand Grenade' years for the ZD30 are 2001 and 2002.

The TD42 your sitting on now would be worth 6-8K as a complete engine to the right buyer...!

I would urge you to sell that zd30 off asap and actually do your 4.2 up if your chasing a torque monster and reliability.

Nice GU TD42 with reasonable kms going for $20 - $25K
Nice 3.0 same year and engine still running $10 - 12K
Pay a rip off mech $9k for the worst ever engine swap in a Patrol
Sell a TD42 and gearbox for $1K

One Patrol devalued quicker than a Zimbabwe dollar!

Hmmm, I have a slightly used Harbour Bridge for sale. But wait there's more - Ring now and I will throw in the Opera House for
Just $1 extra!!!

Oh And i will give you $2000 for both 4.2 engine and gearbox...
