94 3.9 range rover auto box problem
hey guys went 4wd today got stuck as i tried getting out ( backwards and forwards) all of a sudden when i tried to get gear all i would get is a grinding noise no matter what gear i tried. let it cool down but still no drive any ideas on what could be. had to get towed out of bush and tow truck home. oil is fine only replaced 200-300km's ago gear selector's seem to fine. when put into gear sounds like it is spinning just getting noise. any help would be great or would be easy just to find a second hand or reco box.

Re: 94 3.9 range rover auto box problem
Hello
I think the problem will be a worn coupling shaft between the auto gearbox and the transfer case and also the input gear in the transfer case.
You can unbolt the round cover on the rear of the transfer case to check it.
After the cover is off, you can pull the input gear out and unbolt the coupling shaft.
If the shaft/gear is your problem, you should buy an input gear with cross drilling and the fitting coupling shaft.
They have a longer spline and the input gear is cross drilled for better lubrication.
Hope that helps.

A mate with a 94 had a similar problem. The splines in the torque convertor for auto input shaft had stripped. Easy fix.
This happened when he was backing a trailer over a gutter.
