Might be an option with BIG tyres but DANA 60s are land anchors!!
There are a couple of winch trucks that run them (solid) but they arent as worried about land anchors as much as crawler!.
Would not be a cheap option either!!
I would go a GU front with heat treated cvs for a GQ. Unless tuff truck is your aim!

Why not a D60 35spline GQ/GU HIpinion?

Buds customs is building me a custom housing with GQ centre, 35 spline axles (inner and outer) running Longfield uni's, Ried racing knuckles, artec double shear hi-steer and a 10" ram
Strength, good steering = piece of mind

I have NEVER seen, and no one I have spoken too has seen a hipinion Nissan diff fail in a front diff.

Land anchors how?
I've run Solid D60's in 2 rigs now... They have better under diff clearance then GQ/GU diffs, and weight would be about the same.

They would be the same strength wise too. Only difference is that i believe the d60 would have more aftermarket options

Are you sure? Jeeps tend to come with Dana 44s which are a lot smaller than the 60.

No drugs.. a nissan crown wheel is approx 9 inches, a d60s is approx 10.5 inches plus allow 10mm of cast housing compared to 3mm steel housing of a nissan.
That would make the d60 at least 2inches bigger overall
happy to be proven wrong. maybe a photo of both with a tape measure.

Can line up flexy's next to mine, he runs GQ diffs, and 37" kevlars I run D60 semi float rear and 37" Krawlers.
Will take pics with a tape measure and happily prove you wrong....... :finger:
That said, mine is a Solid Axle Ind high pinion aftermarket unit, not some junkyard Dana.

MikeH, correct, standard rear TJ diffs were Dana 44's. Mine isn't standard.

Will post pics here tomorrow.

Measured today with cars side by side, D60 clearance 295mm, Patrol diff 285. Can't link phone to iPad, will post pics later.
Not 100% sure, but Goodyear Kevlars may be slightly taller than my Krawlers too.

I looked into these, as I'm sure your aware, and I didn't want ball joint or the ruff stuff housing. And mine are 35 spline axles so no necking down.

Buddy will have more info on the diff your serious about it more wheel drive.

i owned a jeep on rock cruser 60s and they had more clearance under the pumpkin than my tj with gq diffs in it when fitted with the same size tyres .

terflex and dynatracs have even more clearance again .

you do not even know the crown wheel sizes and are clearly making uneducated posts of here say against people that have previously owned
or currently own d60s . d60 crown wheel is 9.75 inches h233b is 9.25 inches . i would hardly call that two inches. .

Small side note but why did you chose to put gq Diffs in instead of upgrading the Dana gear?

Probably because GQ gear is cheap to source and available everywhere, as are matching rims.... Dana 60's are harder to find..... there are 60 rears around the place from old J trucks etc if you know a few old Jeep hoarders (as I do), but try finding a D60 front locally.... then there are additional costs like hubs to match the rears etc, as many/most front 60's will be 8 lug etc.

Wouldn't a build D44 (what ever was factory in TJ) be stronger than GQ?

Everything i found on D60s said approx 10.5 inch crown wheel. Being cast the housing will be alot thicker than a steel housing. therefore by that 2 inches by that would be right.
As i said happy to be proved wrong!! ;)

I thought a D60 was 9.75 and a D70 was 10.5.

That said, a Jana76 kit will fit a D70 crownwheel into a D60 housing with some trimming so there is plenty of room there.

It's interesting to hear from the guys with them both there as I would have been wrong if I was guessing.

No, the stock D44 rear in a TJ would have thinner axle tubes, smaller crownwheel, and skinnier axles with lower spline count as standard. You can upgrade them to 35 spline cro-mo axles etc, but if you're swapping the front out whats the point?

That said, my TJ runs a Solid Axle Ind high pinion D44 front, which is substantially stronger than a factory D44 unit, thicker/larger axle tubes etc.
Even the old 84 chero ran the standard D44 factory housing with detriot centre, 4.88's etc, but standard factory axles. Never broke a thing, but then old iron is always going to be better than newer junk.

If you ever get the chance, check out a factory Dana 30 under the front of a JK.... it looks like a toy diff

$7950 includes a modified air locker
$6750 minus air locker

Its a great price when you look at the parts going in! The Ried racing kingpin knuckles are around $1200 alone, not shipped.

What air locker is it using? The new ones have a farely bad design fault that fails quite often.

I have a high pinion D60 in the shed....Solid Axle Ind casting, 4.88 Yukon gears, disc brake, full detriot centre, 35 spline cromo axles, patrol stud pattern, 1350 yoke....approx 60" wide. Tried selling it a while back for $4k.
Any takers?
