Drive belts?

Post by HANCOCK »

I am looking for a better drive belt set-up for my 3f Toyota motor as the hydro steering pump is to hard on the stock vee belt. When the pump gets loaded up the belt slipping sometimes even with heaps of tension on it and its chewing through belts. Has or can anyone shed some light on to different belt options that can be used and how to adapt them to my motor?

Thanks Nathan

Can you adapt a toothed cam timing belt and pulley off a cam timing set?

Just a few things.......

Is it the stock pump? If not, what pump is it and what is the size of the pully compared to stock
Is it in the stock position and is the belt in the stock configuration?

What is the percentage of the pully's diameter or angular portion that is contacted by the belt?
Is it possible to fit an idler to get more belt contact percentage? You may find that by doing this you increase the HP you can push throught the belt before it slips as there's a higher contact patch.

A lot of the guys running LS motors and hi performance pumps are using serpentine ribbed belts instead of vee belts. Does the pully system on the 3F lend itself to swapping out the vee pullys for ribbed pulleys?

Its I psc SP-1200X pump with a pulley that's the same size as the stock one and its now mounted where the air con was and where using what was the air con tensioner on it with the belt running the same as the air con did. There is 45% of the pulley contacted by the belt. Currently the v tensioner is pulling upwards witch intuit pulls the belt away a little from the pulley but I think I may be able to swap to a flat tensioner to push down increasing the contact to maybe 60%. I was hoping that there would be a way to swap to a better ribbed belt system all together rather then keep struggling with the one i have but can not find any info on some thing to suit the 3F.

can you go to a dual belt setup ?
The excessive tension will not be doing any favours to the bearings\bush's in the system
