is there a "weight" differance between the Penrite and the previous band you were using ??? ie: 20W10 versus 20W40
A change in the oil weight seems the most likely cause and simply changing back may solve the problem, why did you change anyway ???
similar thing explained here .....

If u would like to know my opinion about Penzoil............... It really is an inspecific recycled oil.
they say that multipurpose oil is for deisels and petrols etc. of all types sizes and uses. It is not possible to make an oil that is really good for a task such as this. They just recycle and filter all your old oil and make a ruff guess as to the wieght and put some chemicals in it to make it run nicely.
The other thing is, if ur car blows white when it starts ( probably ) it is using a little oil here but nothin like wat u speak of.

Still havent stated what the oils "weight " is ?????
IE:
10w20
20w40
20w50
etc etc etc etc , should be on the front of the bottle !
Any chance of contacting the previous owner and seeing what oil they used ?

Oil Usage
i too have a MQ diesel and it is using a bit of oil.
What is the best oil to use. Also differant coloured smoke means what????
How often should an oil change (inc. filters) be changed.
What additives can be used to improve the life of an old girl.
Cheers

For the diesel engine i prefer Castrol Super RX, or HPR diesel.
every 5000kms for all filters except air and that can be every 10 000km's.
Blue means burning oil
Black means running too rich ( too much fuel getting into the cylenders )
white means burning raw fuel ( left over in cylenders after turn off, it will do this when u first start it on a cold morning as the injectors in a SD33 commonly drip a little after its killed ).
The only aditive i have found to actually work personally is the really thick engine stop smoke. It works!!!

Thats what I was told when i rang up an asked about it, that it could be just cleaning the old stuff out.
but its hade to see how i would have to put 4 to 5L in if its just cleaning the engine.
and now its starting to blow smoke which it did'nt do befor the oil change?

Oils debate
I think you guys are right about the new oils cleaning engine out. I spoke to an oil engineer from the mining industry (analyses oils in crusher etc) he said old engines run better on prehistoric oils. New oils are made for new engines with differant runnings etc.
Sounds good to me. At least I now think my motor is OK.
