Free wheeling hubs

As some of you know i aint got these onme rig and am seriously considering putting some on.

Is it difficult??

Can i take em off a wrecking car with no hassles??

Okay i am picking up a pair of these and i want to know if there is anything else i need to know when taking them off the wrecking car and putting them onto mine.

NB Remember that my car does not have them at the moment.

when you undo the 6 bolts and take off the locking hub, make sure you get all of it, you will have the locakable housing, then there is another bit that slides onto your drive shaft, without this, it will not lock,

there is also 2 shims ( steel rings) inside the actual hub, it may pay to grab these too incase your front diff setup is differant.

Okay guys i now have a second hand set of these which i would like to install onto my car which doesnt have them at the moment.

I took the locking hubs off the wrecking car and the only thing that came off was the actual locking hub itself and nothing else. I Had a quick look at mine and instead of having a locking hub it just has a cover but with the cover off it looks very similar to the other car.

Could i do any damage to my car when putting these on?? AND is there an easy way to check wether they are working or not once i have put them on my car??

Gonna give it a go to put them on tomorrow.

after you have put them on, jack up the whole front of the car, and with them unlocked spin one wheel, and make sure the other is not moving, then, lock both hubs, and spin one wheel again, with the hubs locked both should spin,

just make sure that when you put them on, it is always best to apply a bit of grease inside the locking hub, and also it doesnt hurt to make a gasket to go between the 2 surfaces, this will minimise water entry, which bearing hate.

just make sure that when you put them on, it is always best to apply a bit of grease inside the locking hub,


Only use a smear. Grease can cause huns to not wind in far enough (Hydraulic lock)

U cannot cause any real damage as all they do is sit on your CV/ axle and wrap around it. if they work u will know it from jacking the car up as previosly described. If they dont work then when they are locked your front shaft wont spin and only one wheel will spin. just means that they havnt locked. thats about all that can happen.

Another thing i am concerned with is my car must be " Locked " now becasue obviously i dont have the hubs on now and its locked already.

Just leave transfer in 2wd and all will be OK.

You probably know this already, but dont do what I did once and change into 4WD on the move when the hubs are unlocked. I came off the beach, unlocked the hubs, went back on after lunch and forgot that I had unlocked the hubs.

I still havent forgotten the sound it made............

it only makes that sound until the front shaft is lockedin and spinning as quick as the rear :twisted:
