Tdi rebuild

Post by Roktruk »

How long's a piece of string?? Mate's Defender has dropped no 4 cylinder, looks like major leakage past the rings, pressurising the crankcase and dumping oil in the turbo. Common problem?? and the biggy......how much to fix? The turbo may also need a rebuild $$$???

Best guess I found was that it will be $6000 for a total rebuild incl injectors and pump. For some reason I dont think this includes labour so its not going to be cheap. I think a good second hand TDi goes for about the same money.

Pulled the head on the Tdi today. Major gasket blow out into the cam follower hole. Result: pressure in the sump forcing oil out the breather into the turbo. The rockers had also been too tight, and worn out the cap on the end of the valve stems. Should be a rocket on all 4 cylinders

Looks like a couple of hundred to fix rather than a couple of thousand

Yeah, I hear head gaskets on the 300tdi are common failures about 200K.... Good to hear an easy fix.

Got the TDi back on the road on Saturday. Heaps better. We've fixed the underlying problem, but it looks like the turbos stuffed. It "rings" slightly at idle, and makes a B^&%^ of as noise on boost.

That little compressor obviously didn't like the oil that was forced into the intake
