To me NO other 4wd can give me the freedom and choices of the TJ. If the sun is shinning I can take the roof down, if it's cold I can put a hard top on. If a few of my mates want to go on a HARDCORE 4wd w/e then I can mix it with the best of them and sometimes do it better. I can put some polish on the TJ and she comes up as good as any of the ricers around, and they don't have a convertable.

NO other 4WD manufactuer can boast they have only 4wd's in their line up, Jeep ONLY make 4wd's. No 2wd's like Toyo, Nissian or Ford. Some say that the newer Jeeps arn't "real" 4wd's but look at the amount of plastic and elec gizmos is on most of the newer 4wd's these days.

Really it comes down to respecting each other and having fun.

Jeep made 2WD CJ's for the mail service if I remember rightly.

Only for special order & they made those in right hand drive as well (for the US postie's) but they were not available to the general public, as the 2WD Landrover's are.

Just the way the numbers are rounded - two votes difference, but percentages were rounded to the same figure.

Hmmm lads more Jeep history.....
Willys Overland whom produced Jeeps, had been long producing 3wd vehicles beforehand.
Since 1940's Willy's added had 2wd versions of their Jeep Truck & Wagon (mine for example was a 2wd version of the wagon) plus they produced the Jeepster which was 2wd.
Kaiser & amc when they bought the Jeep brand also continued to produce 2wd versions and AMC secured the US Postal contracts.
Plus quite a few Jeeps were produced in 2wd for military service - moslty used as Tow rigs for aircraft etc.
Chrysler continued the 2wd theme & produced the XJ Cherokee in a 2wd model, thank fully it was never brough out here - but produced nonetheless,
As for the current KJ & WJ, I don't think they were/are offered in 2wd, but I could be wrong.....

So much for that theory huh ;)

When I stated that Jeep only made 4wd's, I was refering to their current line up.

Jeep have made MANY 2wd's and some of the best Jeeps in my opinion were 2wd. The J10 was only 2wd CJ when relased, we have here in Aus some of the rare ones that are 4wd. I'm still trying to find and old overlander wagin to get my hands on, that would be my DREAM Jeep, but only 2wd ;)

Sorry about the confusion.

Since at least as early as World War I, the U.S. Army had been looking for a fast, lightweight all-terrain reconnaissance vehicle. In early 1940, however, things became urgent as the Axis powers began to score victories in Europe and Northern Africa and there became the need to rapidly develop a new type of vehicle. The Army put out a call to automobile manufacturers asking for a running prototype for such a vehicle in just 49 days.
The original government specifications were as follows: Vehicle weight: Approximately 1,300 pounds (This proved to be totally unrealistic and later was raised to 2,160 pounds.)
Four-wheel drive
Engine (power): 85 pound-feet of torque
Wheelbase: Not more than 80 inches
Tread: Not more than 47 inches
Ground Clearance: Minimum ground clearance of 6.25 inches
Payload: 600 pounds
Cooling System: Good enough to allow a sustained low speed without overheating the engine.
The Bantam Car Company, which had supplied some earlier reconnaissance vehicles to the Army, and Willys-Overland, were the only two companies that responded to the Army's call, although over 130 companies had been invited to respond. The 49-day deadline was problematic, however, and Willys-Overland asked for more time to finish their vehicle. Bantam's only hope to meet this deadline was to bring in outside help.
The prototype of the vehicle that would become the Willys MB was designed by Karl Probst, a Detroit engineer who had worked for several automotive firms. Enlisted by National Defense Advisory Committee Head William S. Knudsen (former president of General Motors), Probst accepted the patriotic challenge without salary and went to work July 17, 1940. In just two days, he had completely laid out plans for the Bantam prototype, the precursor of the Jeep® vehicle. On July 22, Bantam's bid was submitted, complete with layouts of this new vehicle. The bid claimed that the vehicle met the weight limit of 1,300 pounds, although it was actually much heavier.
Bantam's first hand-built prototype was complete and running by September 21, 1940, meeting the 49-day deadline. The Army put this prototype through torturous testing, taking the Bantam Jeep vehicle over 3,400 miles, all except about 250 were unpaved. The testers eventually concluded "this vehicle demonstrated ample power and all requirements of the service."
Ultimately, both Willys and Ford submitted prototypes based on the Bantam plans supplied to them by the Army. The Willys "Quad" and the Ford "Pygmy" prototypes added their own changes and modifications to the basic Bantam design.
For example, the Willys Quad prototype exceeded the specified weight limit, due in large part to its superior engine. This ultimately worked to Willys' advantage when the weight limit was increased: the strength in the Willys vehicle - powered by its "Go Devil" - was the only one that met the Army's power specifications. In fact, the Willys' 105 pound-feet of torque not only exceeded the required power, but dwarfed Bantam's 83 and Ford's 85 pound-feet of torque.
In light of Bantam's shaky manufacturing and financial position, and the advantages of the Willys vehicle, the Army contract was awarded to Willys. Since the War Department required a large number of vehicles to be manufactured in a relatively short time, Willys-Overland granted the United States government a non-exclusive license to allow another company to manufacture vehicles using Willys' specifications. Pursuant to this agreement, Willys supplied Ford Motor Co. with a complete set of specifications.
During World War II, Willys and Ford filled more than 700,000 orders, with Willys-Overland supplying more than 330,000 units of the original Willys MB.

Do Landrover make 2WD? Not currently over here in Oz anyway. They used too make some in pommy land 20 years back.
If Jeeps are so great why did I have tow a modified Wrangler running 35 A/T's on wet grass slope with my stocko Patrol Wagon on 32 M/T's? :D

I was also under the impression there were 2wd Cherokee's available in US.

Because the Jeep was running AT's and you were running MT's fairly obvious, hardly the fault of Jeep! Was he aired down were you! Many varibles outside the make of vehicle.

Ge you bite well :D

Both aired down, you had to be there, funny at the time, another 4 cars as well all stocko but had muddies on, there was a tight corner at the bottom so you couldn't get a runoff, some of the others just made it, he was last and we had started putting away the camera's and headed back to the cars, thought he'd piss it in with. He had about 6 goes, it was like ice, each time sliding back down, wheels still driving forwards, ending up at 45 degrees at the bottom. If I didn't have my front tyres on solid stuff I wouldn't have been able to tow him. Amazing the difference tyres can make. All Terrains aren't.

I realise that, but some people don't seem to take my sense of humour seriously :D It was halarious that all this money had been spent lifting this Jeep, importing parts from the USA, and spend big money on 35" A/T's, the owner saw the funny side, though we'll still keep playing the tape back to him at every opportunity though :D

Weight/wheelbase would be a major factor as well - I was out on a club trip yesterday and there was a really, really slimy slope, nothing too long or too steep, but I struggled up with 33x 12.5MTs on the TJ, whilst XJs strolled up no worries.
Apparently people think I'm too patronising (that means I treat them like they’re stupid).

Nah I got the funny side of it :D. Just thought I would idly have a chop cause I was bored and in general I find the baggin of makes to make no sense when there are many other factors involved. I wasn't having a go at you for your sense of humour I just made the post because there are many different levels of experience on the board who read the threads so I thought it would only be fair to put some perspective on the situation (even though I wasn't there but I got the gist of it) before anti Jeep Histeria took ahold (joking). He could of had 46 AT's on and probably would still be spinning em up on the hill. I have had the pleasure of dragging several Toyota's out of the Snow because the owners refused to air down. I watched a guy in a 60 series attack a hill for about 40mins in the snow and he kept drifting into the bank. He had to get up it as it was the only way out. So I gets in the truck drive up ask him if him and his mate need a hand (he had been there 2hrs) got told no thanks so I said on leaving "if yo haven't aired down give it a crack and keep out of the go peddle" I then took off past them 50m did a three point turn into the drifts and come back down past them ( I think then they got the hint ). 10 minutes later they were on there way.

Moral of the story it had nothing to do with toyota but all to do with the operators. The toyota was just as capable as my vehicle it was just not setup for the conditions properly. In fact I have found many people who never thought that airing down in the snow would help. It helps big time you only have to look at what they run in iceland to see what ground patch does for a truck in the snow. Another one that intrigues me is there are people I know that KNOW they should air down but don't because they are too lazy only to get themselves in trouble looking for someone to help them out.

Mate I wasn't having a go more of just a sarcastic reply must of been particularly knarky that night :D

I am in Perth at the moment, Townsville last year, Darwin next year.

Your right though I do find it funny that he would go to all the expense of putting import parts and lift etc and then fit 35' AT's what was he thinking

1. the Yota... the 40,75 or 80 series more so the 75
2. Sierra - undescribable
3. Holden jackeroo is best manufactured for a 4wd due to its Isuzu parts.
4. Defender
