Idler arm
Hi guys,
Does anybody have a cheaper or better alternative to replacing the idler arm? Mines on the way out. And according to the bloke at the repair shop my only solution is an original Daihatsu idler arm. And they cost about $250+gst.

idler arm?
Hi Rod,
Is it your idler arm that's gone? if so how, I think you mean your bushes are worn out. If that is the case then you can buy new ones for under $20 and they should last for another few years.
Just my 2c worth

Well I know its only the bushings thats worn on the idler arm, but according to this bloke from Daihatsu, I cant get just the bushing, I have to apparently purchase the complete unit. I suspected that its BS.
Soooo were can I get these bushings from guys?
Mark you said $20?

Rod

I had a similar problem with this last year, I just had the bushes changed. But a few months after, I decided to replace the idler arm as well. I got replacment parts from Federal Mogul. Fits perfectly.
So why did you end up changing the idler arm as well. Didn't the bushes do the job ??

Well I finally replaced those damn idler bushes! Thanks heaps Mr. Hoult.
Noticed the difference straight away. Just about all the slackness is gone!
Murray, its pretty straight forward to replace.
1. Remove the big nut (duh)
2. Use a pinch bar or similar to GENTLY slide off the end with bushing. On the last inch it gets a bit tight because of the angle but if you continue levering it gently it will come off.
3. Remove old s**t bushing. I use a flat screw driver to unbind the sides and wd40. slid right off after that.
4. Clean all the parts before reassemling
5. Apply heaps of the grease supplied. You can always wipe off the excess after.
6. Lever idler back in place and use a soft hammer to tap back in. Tighten nut.
7. Take truck to the bush and flog the c**p out of it. then goto #1.
Cheers,
Rod
