Parts unavailability again!

Post by Muddy999 »

The fan clutch turned out the be unusable, so I am on the hunt again. Can anyone tell me, or does anyone know, whether the fan clutch from a 2.8 hilux is the same as that from the Rocky? (The stud pattern is what I am interested in.) Who knows, I might get lucky, but I do not have a Hilux close to hand and probably won't for about a fortnight, as I will be away from home.

Should I not be able to find one, the fan is spinning at about a 1/4 speed, owing to the viscous coupling having had the richard. Were I to weld it solid, is there any dramas? The only one that I can see so far is should I do a river crossing, the sudden shock may cause some issues. Considering that I have no rivers about to do crossings in with the drought, this is not really an issue as I see it. Is there any others that you guys know of?

Thanks,
Muddy.

Can you pull the old hub apart? Toyota have the fluid available as a spare part- do a search and you'll find the part number on here somewhere.

The other major drama you will have with a soild fan clutch is the amout of fuel you will consume. This will also affect your power outputs as the engine is driving the fan all the time.

I know the fan in my Feroza is pretty noisy whe its running as well, this might get annoying. I have a spare clutch for the feroza here that isnt that old, (came with my new motor) if they fit i'll let you have it pretty cheap.

That would be awesome, but do you think that a petrol and a diesel would be cross compatible?

Here's the specs for the Toyota 2.8 diesel:

http://www.daviescraig.com.au/main/clut ... &sys2=5124

They only list the Rocky 3Y engine clutch fan:

Ah, I looked there, isn't the 3Y a petrol engine though? Doesn't it have a different sized clutch fan?

Just use the measurements of the Hilux 2.8 and compare it to the one you've got to see how similar they are...

Have you checked to see if you can pull it apart and refill it with new fluid?

Yes I have and it does not appear that you can. As for the Hilux, if I had access to one, I would look, however 99% of the people about here are Rodeo/courier/78 series men. Most of the guys that drive Tojo's are not close to hand at the moment.

*Smacks forehead* I am having such a blonde day, I am blaming the sick wife who is snarking at me from the next room and demanding tea and scrambled eggs.

Ok, the 2.8 Hilux is close but no dice. Slightly bigger in all the wrong places. However th Delta coupling looks like it may fit, after being padded out with some washers.

You shouldn't have any touble if you make it a solid fan. The Jeep boys have trouble with the clutches going all the time and they just stick a few self tapping screws though the fan and clutch so the fan spins when the engine does.
