EXO design

Hey guys because I have decided to be Grimace like sam and redzook I need to design an exo just to help the roof not get creased when I roll.

This picture is what i'm thinking of.....what do you think.

the cross brace you have up the top is a good idea, it will help the exo to not flex onto the body when it rolls. Redzook doesn't have that, (he should) but I would make it a full X. makes for a much stonger exo. but ads a tiny bit more weight up top.

The reason why their is only one is coz I consider that 40mm tube will be strong enough in compression as well as tension. Just consider that the two front corners are the most likely to take the weight so the the pics show the two stresses on the bars.

Only real probs i see with this exo cage is that there is nothing stopping the entire cage falling sideways on a hard roll/flop as there is no cross brace on the B-Hoop. And there is also not much stopping it from folding backward or forward if the vehicle endo's or flips backward. Tying the A- Pillar into a tube front bar will help this a little.

If your only looking for a little more protection from light flops and rubbing on trees and rocks then this Exo should be fine but if you are wanting a cage that will save you in a roll you have no real choice but to also add atleast a 4 point internal cage. Unless you are happy to cut holes through the body to cross brace it.

The same also goes for Redzooks Exo design.

Exo cages are always a compromise.

i'm about to do mine in a few weeks and have decided to do the following design. its hard to see the roof so the second attachment is how i planned to brace it. its not as strong as a 'double x' on the roof, but its mainly to provide the most protection for the drivers seat.

all you are really going to get it something to stop the gutter getting dings in it. Why don't you just weld some angle iron along the gutter line and run some laterals that could double as roofracks...

weight up top is not good and is more likely to make you roll...

and if you are getting so worried about crossbracing on your cages, why not run tensioned wires in an 'X' across all the available openings, you could even run some across the front window.

my experience with bars has been that they are fine for stopping supermarket trolleys putting scratches in your paint, but they cause more damage in a real impact.

I think driving in NZ is a little different to driving in OZ. (or what I have seen from photos)

NZ seems to be mud and slop while Oz brush driving is more rock

Hence you might not need a cage in NZ if ya flop but here you can cause a fair bit of damage......believe me I know.

That first photo looks that same as my car, minnus the creased roof. What did you do with it after that happened? Was it a write off?

I put the exo on mine for a number of reasons but mainly to save the windscreen surround. i had previously come close to smashing it on near rolls and didn't want to go to the hassles of having to do a major repair. I have since lent it against a couple of trees and rested it on the ground on a near front endo. It hasn't shifted or buckled yet has saved the cab. The added weight I can live with, but i have noticed it.
