33s for a shorty?
Moderator: -Scott-
33s for a shorty?
I got the car dirty on the weekend and have concluded I need 33s, and probably something more aggressive than the Cooper S/Ts.
I'm not interested in the JTs/Swampers/Boggers type of tyre, more the BFG MT/Cooper STT/Wrangler MTR style of tyre, in 285/75-16. I don't want to go 33x12.5-15, because I don't want that much width, and 33x10.5-15 are too uncommon.
Noise is an issue for me, because I want to do longer trips, which will involve a lot of highway running.
Who runs what, and would you buy it again?

I am running a set of 255/85/16 (33.5x10.4x16) bfg muds for daily use, 305/70/16 (33x12.5x16) Radial claws for light offroad duties and 35x13.5x16 Bias claws for trips.
I would buy some goodyear MTR's. MAtes use em and find them quieter than bfg and coopers and still as good off road.

Hi Scott,
as I think I mentioned last night, I run 285 BFG MT's for serious driving, no complaints at all, they bag down really well at lower pressures. I haven't noticed any excess wear at this stage compared to my previous set, both were made in the USA.
I have driven other pajeros with MTR's and they felt similar to the BFG's offroad, and I think they are a bit quieter on the black stuff. The MTR's seem to have a slightly narrower tread width than the BFG's, though I haven't actually measured the difference. The 255/85/16 size that Grant mentioned are also a good size with less chance of rubbing on full lock, and they can fit on a 7" rim ok.
If you only want to run one set of tyres then the MTR's may be a better all round choice with the quieter running, though price may also come into it. Don't forget that 16" wheels are more expensive than 15", perhaps that may be a factor as well.
regards
John

3.5 L with too much stuff, and a front locker waiting on the shelf.
Thanks for that John.
What's the availability of these sizes in more remote areas? I'm favouring the 285/75 because I see them on a lot of 'Cruisers and Patrols, so I'm guessing I'm more likely to find them than some of the other sizes. If I've guessed wrong I should re-think my theory.
Hekta,
You don't mention mods - do you have any clearance issues with the 33x12.5? Do you have suspension lift/body lift? What model Paj?
Thanks,
Scott

Well I've had two separate fitters put 33x12.5 on my 7 inch rims!!
Taken them down to 15psi on stockton no probs!
i'd only do it if i was really stingy... but it's worth nothing that on the procomp site it does say 7.0-9.0 rim size.

interesting.... coopers, bfgs, mtrs, interco all need a min of 8" rim....
Not that it really matters but I am just raising an argumentative point...
I looking at the 285/75/16 xterrains to go on to my stock 16x7's.

Good choice.
Not overly noisey on the black stuff and have good road handling qualities.
11.5 in width (on 16" rims) is probably better than the 12.5 aswell (on the 15" rims) - it's a fair chunk of rubber under the SWB.
With 33 x 12.5 I have nearly 1" of rubber hanging out past the flares.
Overall - very happy so far.

Man, im in love with the x terrains. I'd never heard much about them untill now, but they appear 2 be an awsome, and not to mention long lasting tyre. Anyone got a price on these by any chance??
If not i'll ring up a sockist, c what the 33/11.50r16's r goin for. (Man i'd love the 37's though )

Well guys, I bought the MTRs last night. Now I've gotta negotiate a good price on the ROH steelies...
Thanks for the input and advice.
And I agree the ProComp X-Terrains look impressive, and being able to fit them to 16x7s is attractive, but I'm not a big fan of directional tyres for all-round practicality - what do you do with the spare?
Maybe I've just gotta loosen up...

My claws arent so bad as you are able to run em the non directional way with no dramas... I seem to get flats on the drivers side mostly so thats what the spare is for.
Scott.... what did you pay for your mtrs?? If you can say
