auto ZF box not working

Post by Rangee »

Hi guys,
Got the Rangee in having the haltech set up and the guy calls me and says the gear box does not work, i have had the Stall converter lowered by 150 rpm and then carefully installed, he said he drove it into his work shop and then heard a metalic sound .. from underneath .. ( ohh sh@$T ) and now it is in neutral where ever you put the selector ...
it is a 87 4 speed auto ..
anyone got any ideas..
thanks
Ted
ps he is going to put a oil pressure meter on it to see if the oil pump in the transmission is working ... i hope the stall converter has not shit its self ..

Common problem if not fitted by experienced personel is that the dog that drives the pump is not engaged properly, end result pump dies and so does all gears.

Hope not this

put the pressure gauge on it se what you have.

If no pressure and everyone is sure that the oil level is correct then you have to rmove to check pump I believe.

oil pump

Post by Rangee »

yep they removed the oil line that goes to the front cooler and truned the engine over .... no oil .... should have covered his work shop ..
so they have started the removal ... will this damage anything else if the pump is stuffed... like gears etc... i am sourcing a oil pump now .. just wanna know how much of my wine budget has to be diverted to the RR again ....
thanks for your help
cheers

Often it will result in little bits of metal broken off from the pump circulating around in the auto - not a good thing. Did you install the torque convertor or did someone else? If it was someone else I would be going straight back to them and a) getting them to replace the pump, and b) ripping open the auto to ensure that no bits of unwanted metal are floating around in there.

BTW - how far did the car drive before it farcked itself? My best record is about 5 metres!!!!!

Don't feel bad - we installed my auto three times before we got it right.

Had the same problem as you did, thought it engaged three times but obviously didn't. Was really bizarre in that we drove it off the stands, drove it back on and then the next day it had no drive when we went to drive off again.

I took the gamble with mine and didn't get it overhauled. We removed bellhousing and pump and fished out all the broken bits. The bits we fished out looked to be about the same size as what broke off so just put a replacement pump in. I've probably done 5,000kms since then without any dramas at all.

ok the update for those who want some amusement.

They said they drained the oil in the sump and there were fragments of metal on the magnet on the plug, this was when they first called me,
i pick it up today with the " Ted will Fix it " attitude, called a few tranny blokes and they said if the oil pump has shat its self there is no way the metal bits can get into the rest of the gear box ... so i drain the oil from the pan and found no filings on the magnet and no filings in the bottom of the pan... so tonight i take off the bell housing and oil pump and get a new one tomorrow ... i will take pics as i go ... for those who wanna see .
cheers

hmmm....i'm very interested to see your progress ted.

i installed my own ZF, but it will be a while before it's ready to be driven anywhere.

frankly your little thread has left a very dark and empty feeling in the bottom of my stomach.

i was looking forward to my test run.

i know that feeling .. it has a metallic crunching sound to it ...
your question is ... " did i do it right " should i check it ???
or will you take the "she will be right mate" approach ????
that is the question ...

ok everyone on this thread .. what should he do .... check it or fix it later ..?????
pics are comming .. i have it all out and the oil oump has lost the two lugs and has a crack in the cog... i will see if i can order a new oil pump today .. there was not any filings in the sump .. dont think it had been run long enough to push it around .. there were a few bits in the pump its self ...
it seems that the oil is returned to the sump straight from the oil pump/ TC so the Gear box should be ok ... not going to get it stripped town. will show pics .. to those who email me .. dont know how to post them here.
cheers
