What Petrol

Post by Ralf the RR »

Went to fill up yesterday with LRP as I always have.
Most servos now don't stock it.
Tried 4 servos, and ended up at Woolworths+, where they had one pump only.

Since the heads are alloy, I assume they have hardened valve seats.
So will it run on unleaded?
Or is premium unleaded the go?

I checked a web site that said a low compression Rover engine is OK.
So is an 80 RR a low compression engine?

Also have a 79 4.4.
What fuel can it run on?

You can run regular unleaded and buy a fuel additive for it from supercheap/autobarn or even some servos

petrol

Most early rangies are low comp 8.13/ 1 so reg unleaded is fine, some swear by premium but i dont find any difference. Maybe a h/comp will make more use of premium. Dont waste your money on an additive unless you have over 10/1 compression.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

I am 99% sure that there were no High compression rangies delivered to australia - are fuel was too shite - unless it has been modified you can assume low comp.

The old 3.5L V8 can virtually run LRP, Unleaded and Premium.

The 3.9L and 4.0L rangies and discos don't enjoy running on optimax as they tend to burn exhaust valves as I am told through our club
so stick to 91 Ron regular unleaded for them

What about a P76 4.4L?
Can it run Unleaded?
(Yes we are stupid enough to have 2 Rangies.)

Rex is the yellow one pictured (wife's).
Mine is called Ralf. He is a 79 model, 4.4, white with flares, lifted, and other stuff. (A mans RR :) )

My 84 rangie had original stickers that said high compression ratio.

From what I could find out the valves and seats are OK with unleaded.

Mine runs better on lead replacement though. Most Caltex servos have lrp.

Have you checked lately?
The 3 other servos I went to stopped selling LRP as of 1 Jul.

I noticed on all early 3.9's they are all 8.13 CR, but my 93 Discovery 3.5 was 9.35. Top end performance was not far off the 3.9, but the mid-range torque was the big diffrence in both engines.

Just an obsevation.
