You need an LT230.

earlier rangies and post 4 speed RR.
Disco's have them also.

You want one with 1.192-1 high range gears, unles s yopu run large tyres then the easy option is to fit one from a deisel which are 1.4-1 this will help drive ability on the road but wont fix low range with the biggger rubber.

the Deisel I have here is a 1.192 not the 1.4 like you mentioned I to got a deisel thinking it would be the 1.4 but its wasnt :?

EDIT: No sorry I lied, just double checked its 1.222 ratio :?: I new it wasnt 1.4 but wasnt hundred percent sure what it was.

The defenders definately had the 1.4:1 transfer boxes. This is what I am running and fixed up high range with 33's on perfectly.

Does anyone know if the output shaft on the ZF auto is the correct length
and if the bolt pattern where the adaptor housing attaches to the viscous transfercase is the same as for the LT230 ?

I seem to remember a post on pirate from someone who did this conversion saying there were 2 different spline lengths output shafts on the ZF - will have a look.

Read this Bill. You really should spend some time wading through the BS on pirate - lots of good tech hidden away.

thanks Ben, When I settle into more permanent accomodation and sign up with a service provider I will be able spend more time wading through the bullshit on pirate. but at this time I am on prepaid 25hr for $20 time limits and I found pirate ate up too much time. I only asked about the output shafts to point out to others the possible traps when doing what at first glance may appear to be a simple straighforward conversion.
I am no longer in the motor industry and would not personally own a LandRover later than 87, so a lot of the tech discussions I participate in have no practical value for me anymore. it is just academic interest now.

Fair enough Bill. I am in the same boat as you - I don't think I will ever buy a landie newer than the 1987 county I have now. I plan on keeping it a looooong time.

You learn something new every day. I never knew that they were diffrent, always though they were the same.

I remember someone asking me this once and I wasn't sure. I now know.

Depends on the year model of the box and T-case whether they are different or not.

Your post now prompts me to check the shaft fitment on my Defender LT230 I have stashed away in the shed.

I have a old output shaft laying around that's the same as one in mine. I'll check it out on the weekend.
