by learning some mechanical sympathy - by learning the limits of the vehicle and when not to exceed them, when to back up and try a different line or just accept that tyhe vehicle is not capable of the obstacle. I'm sure they weren't all broken in competitions. it's possible to drive some really hardcore stuff without constantly breaking stuff, even toyota 8" diffs, if you learn what your vehicle is capable of. breaking one or two might be an acceptable path to learning what the rig is capable of, but 6 or 7 is just dumb.

Or just buy a Patrol, I have no mechanical sympathy for my driveline, you're talking to somebody who increased the redline of the TB42 by changing to a 3 litre 8000rpm tacho :D
3 years without a gearbox or diff breakage is a record for any car I've ever owned, I pulled a syncro retaining ring out the sump plug 6 months back and still give it heaps.
I can hammer it as hard as I want offroad and if it can't acheive something I will give up well before the Patrol does.
