Nissan Patrol gearbox noise - can u help
Nissan Patrol gearbox noise - can u help
Hi Wendle and all from Gerry
i am new to 4x4outerlimits and i have a problem which i hope you can help me solve.
I have a 1983 Nissan MQ Patrol 2.8 litre petrol (L28) with a four speed box.
The gearbox is noisy at the higher rev end in 2nd and 3rd Gears. No noise in top or neutral.
just a little in first
It is like a gearshift vibration and is enhanced when tightly grabbing the
gearshift knob. (I have a noisy knob? - now that's a worry!!)
Seriously, I have removed the gearbox twice and ended up replacing all
bearing in the box plus the Input shaft. The gears all seem in top condition.
Still it remains the same.
I would be extremely pleased if anyone could help by advising me.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message

I have a 81 shortie with the l28 four speed and the box has always been noisy, i was concerned when i first bought it probably 5 years ago now but it hasn't got any worse. I guess if ya sure its the gearbox and can tolerate it being a little noisy don't be concerned about it failing. Mine hasn't its done 120,000kms since i got it (with one oil change when i first got it) and it hasn't shown any sign of getting worse or failing.

Thank you for your reply.
i wish it were just a little noisy and could ignore it, but somehow i think there is something wrong, but i'll be damned if i can find it. i'll keep your comments in mind because if i cant solve the problem without a total gearbox change, then i will have to 'put up or shut up'.
Thanks again for your help
Have a beaut day

noise
I had exactly the same problem in my old LWB and it turned out to be the transfer case. What put me on to this was the oil in the gearbox was golden and in the transfer it was black with metalic particals in it. Turned out that a bearing picked up and span in the housing. I drove it around like that for about 6 months.

another thing is are you sure you didn't accidently rub up against an 80 series cruiser and caught (inherent problem disease)
I'm sorry guys, I did park next to one of those foreign machines called a Landbruiser (or something like that).
It was an absolute emergency, i pulled up at the local Surgery, my girfriend was having a baby in the back on the gas bottle (she tried to have it on my sheepskins!!, I soon put a stop to that!!). my wife was hitting me and carrying on about something of which i had no idea - and still dont.
Well to get on with the story, the dog was loving my leg at the time which made me want to pull up quickly (do you know how hard it is to work the clutch under these circumstances?).
Anyway, the Gearbox was making no noise at all and there was only one parking space at the Surgery.I immediately thought i might suicide as both sides of the vacant parking spaces were those foreign 4x4's. Toys r us (or something like that).
Well, I had little or no choice but to have an urgent need to get out of the Mighty Patrol - Due to the rather unfriendly treatment i was getting from the Ladies. The dog as usual was still being friendly!!? Probably thats why they are mans best friend???
Well (again), i was really worried about the Patrol being in such a difficult position, so i sent the Ladies off carrying the newborn which my wife had named Bastard (funny name for a girl) and proceeded to protect my loved one.
i went to my emergency kit and bought out a 20 litre handypak of Rust off.
i immediately sprayed the mighty Nissan and then coated it with thick grease. "This should be safe from those Toys r us foreign cars for about an hour", i thought.
Satisfied, i rolled up a smoke and leaned on the Mighty. i picked myself up, put grease on the spot i had foolishly rubbed off and rubbed my sore bum.
It was beautiful and quiet in the Carpark and as i had the cigarette, i could hear a strange and very unfamiliar noise.
It came from my left and my right, it was the sound of Toyotas rusting!!
ps i did drive away with a gearbox problem Dr Frankenstine
I hope i havent offended any Toyota owners, as i wrote this dribble above for a bit of fun. NO OFFENCE MEANT and i hope none taken.
About the gearbox
i thank you all for your help and will have a serious look at all your suggestions.
Thank you all very much
