new exhaust 300tdi

Post by uninformed »

i had my 110 dfnd serviced today and my muffler has BIG holes in it. so its either replace or up grade. i did a search but didn't find much tech on exhausts( other than upgrade the intercooler insted). i spoke to taipan xp down from my mechanic's and they can do a VORTEX exhaust and 3inch system and is very confident i will get power gains. the vortex is a local design and is ment to actually suck the gases out. i'm thinking mabe like a hyclone. but this is my guess as he didn't want to give to much away. his work does look pretty good. welds etc. so what design principels should i look for, what makes a good exhaust for a turbo deisel.

I just re-did the exhaust on my 110 TD5...

Now its a 3" mandrel bent system with 1 small straight through 3" stainless box mid mounted.

Love it :D Sounds great, spools faster (although you can now hear the turbine out the exhaust at low revs)

And on a hill where I used to be forced to shift to 4th I can now climb in 5th..

Dont go fancy, just straight through, the turbo keeps it quiet.
Landrovers... Nothing else comes close!

had a mate go 3" off the turbo housing on a 300tdi, made a world of difference!
gave more torque in gear, made the car more driveable.
just 3"mandrel bends 3"straight through muffler.
got a bit drummy in the back of the 110 so he ended up putting a 3"straight resonator in (looks like the old fashioned hot dog muffler)
exhaust shop did it for free ;)
the resonator dropped the excess noise and did't effect power at all.
when i drove it i noticed that you could hold a gear up hill instead of dropping a gear. i guess this means it holds onto boost better because the exhaust breathes more efficiently.

you can check out these mufflers at www.nutech2000.com/prod10.htm after doing a search on general 4x4 tech, it seems alot of guys are running 3 inch mandrel bent with NO mufflers. the guy i spoke to quoted $1400 for a 3 inch mandrel bent mild steel with the vortex exhaust, i'm thinking that this is pretty expensive. i haven't had a chance to compare yet. Ben i noticed you have replied about other exhausts, so whats your opinion
