engine questions

Post by zukin »

My 1.3 has decided to pull the pin and call it a day im over fighting it so ive decided to replace the engine rather then keep fixing problem after problem. At the moment 98% driving is to and from work bout 8km away i want something with more power then the 1.3.
i want something pretty easy to put in looking at the suzisport website they have angle drive things for gti engines but does that gti engine then bolt straight to the sierra gearbox??
then there is the 1.6 vitara engine they have adapter plates to fit sierra boxs to vitara engine??
pretty much i just want to know an easy engine with abit more power for road driving??
thanks guys

Maybe put an original engine back in ( or rebuild your own )with a bit of work to the head, a different cam and extractors / exhaust.

Will give you some power / torque increase without mucking around with fitting different motors.

I re-read your post, and you don't mention that you are on a budget, so I will give you the Suzuki range as I see it.
cheapest and easyest is to plonk a fresh Sierra 1.3 back in
same power and drivability, but no conversion or engineering, insurance or rego issues. $7/900

then you have the 1.3 GTI efi donk, a bit more top end power, far better drivability (EFI), and there is nothing like a twin cam rocker cover for wank factor  but you have some small conversion issues and potentialy, engineering, insurance and rego issues. $1300

After that we go to the Vit 1.6 (carb & EFI), a big jump in power right across the board, better drivability (EFI) but you step up to another level of mods to fit it, and you DO have rego/engineer and maybe insurance issues $2200

then you have the 2L 4cyl Vit engine, but they are very rare (and I am not selling mine for anything :D )mega jump in output and conversion costs (they are big) and rego/engineering/insuranse issues.$shit loads

in between the power of the 1.3 and the 1.6 sits the capucino 660cc 4 cyl
(like in Gregs car) a top little engine but all the conversion/rego engineering/insurance issues of the obove and then some.$2500 half cut?

I am saving what I think is the best till last, 1.3 Jimny EFI, more power than a 1.6, detter driveability, and if the bolt pattern is the same (?) no conversion/engineering/rego/insuranse :) $3/4000

Forget suzi engines i went toyota 4agze,cost me about $2500-3000 i think, yes its a lot of work doing a conversion but 180 horsepower in sierra is heaps of fun. ;)

Why not put a chev in then

In my opinion it is about striking a ballance,
the 4A motors (cast iron block)are a strong running reliable engine,
and as the 1.6 Vit's (alloy block)are becoming harder to find ($)they will be even more popular.
But the Vit donk is a sweet conversion in a Sierra and has heaps enough grunt to blow CV's to the shithouse, I cant see the point in making my car heavier to get horsepower I can't use (exept on the street in 2wd)
and if that is your thing well and good, there is nothing wrong with that.
My car pulls like a 13 year old boy with a target underware catalogue,
I am sure the 4AGE would be a weapon as well :)

more power than a 1.6? i heard that the jimny 1.3 wasn't as useable as the sierra 1.3, cept for the EFI on angles n stuff...???

not arguing, cos i got no idea, just curious to get a bit more feedback on pete's comments...

er, I think you are confoozing me with greg mate, but were talking 60kw and around 120ish nm, so a substantial increase over a carby 1.3.

As to being more "usable" I know that most EFI motors are less happy to "chug" along at below normal idle speed than carbs, but otherwise, I would have though that it would have been all win. Also, the fact that they have a rev limter is noce too - in that the mixtures stay pretty good right up to that point rather than progressively leaning out more and more.

PS Pete, check this out: http://www.trailtough.com/ *ehem* this is quite interesting no? that engine looks like a nice neat fit, including the factory airbox.

toyota 4agze 1.6 efi supercharged intercooled.
125kw @ 6400
206nm @ 4400
I know there heavier than a suzi eng but not that much, the extra weight stopped lifting the front to high on sand hills but will lift wheels at will on the street even running 33s.just remember to brace the t/case arms & spring perches.
i've run suzi 1.3 & 1.6 engs found them ok but i was after something with a bit more poke & the efi is good at any angle.
Not bagging suzuki engines just they weren't enough power for BIG sand dunes or keeping up with v8s.

any one know the compatibility of the 1.3 jimny motor to a 1.3 sierra box

and lastly how hard would it be to fit these in a 1.0 sierra

I believe that the jimny motor will bolt straight up to the sierra box.

I thought that the GZE was 117kw ( and 240nm), and the 20V 121kw

A 1.3 can be made to fit a 1.0, but it is nearly as much work as any other type of engine conversion, as both mounts are in the wrong place, the gearbox comes through a slightly different how if the floor etcetcetc.

a 4AGE can be had in 88kw and 100kw version and might be a better option if you are starting with a 1.0, but bear inmind that a 1.0 has weaker diffs and no power boot forteh brakes, also the rear brake design is inferior, and the bonnet has less clearance.

All up, IMHO, it might be better to part the 1,0 out and find a cheap 1/3 with a ratty motor to use to start jumny build.

Easiest and best curve for offroad is 1.6 Vitara carby or 8v efi..... 8v efi isnt that common though.

8V carby Vit is alos about the easiest swap there is in a sierra.

16V is awesome for power but torque down low isnt great.

A GTI motor will suck a$$ for offroad...most of the power is at 5000-7800 rpm.

Do the Vitara 8v... if you want extra power over that buy the EFI and blow it or go the corolla engine.

there is a tray back zook in an old fast fours & rotories mag

had the ausi 4a-ge 86kw sprinter engine
had 31inch tyres std r&p ratio

std engine & std toyota computer with pod type air filter & sports exhaust

it does a 15.4 sec 1/4 mile not bad for a zook

just think how good the 4a-gze would go

I have put a jimny motor in my WT sierra. It bolted straight up without any problems. To answer christover1 i am not sure if it is a G or M.
Another benefit is the power steering. ;)
The jimny motor is nice & smooth to drive. I run 31" tyres and series 1 rockhopper but would think that the newer series 3 rockhopper would be a vast improvement to onroad drivability in high range.
