GU Steering Box on GQ?

Post by John H »

Howdy all, How much modification is required to fit a GU steering box onto a GQ. I know that the pitman arm is a different shape (this doesn’t bother me) but is the taper for the tie rod different? Does it use the same mounts for the chassis and steering column? Anyone’s previous experience would be appreciated.
As soon as it was made idiot proof, someone went and designed a better idiot.

I think you need a different steering arm as well. AS the GU one is longer and has different tie rod ends(TRE). A while ago there was the parts list from Mal Leslie engineering posted which listed a GQ/ with GU stuff steering arm.

But then again this may have just been for those that have fitted complete GU axles.

use the GU pitman arm (have the taper reversed), run some new crush tubes through the chassis (mounting pattern is different), hook up fluid lines and column and off you go.

If you're going to do this mod, you may want to fit an oil cooler for the power steering as the power steer fluid still boils when working it hard.

I fit them all the time, The steering box bolts straight up to the original holes 1 for 1 but the tie rod taper is diferent and on a GQ the tierods point one up and one down but on a GU both point down. The original tierods are welded in but we do one of two things,1/ make an arm with a GQ tierod one end and a GU the other or taper ream out the pitman arm to suit a GQ taper, advantages are the GQ tierods are larger. :D

cheezy, is there a couple different spec GU boxes?
the one that i have fitted to a friends car would not bolt straight up to the original holes. the bolt spacing was the same, but the box wasn't even close to lining up with the holes when sitting snug against the chassis rail, kinda had to be twisted a bit and sit a bit lower, which was impossible.
