Wont the pinion gear also need to be re-designed if it is to be lifted? As it drives on a different angle top the crownwheel if lifted.

the only couple of times I've seen pinion shafts shear is when axle wrap, on unrestrained leaf spring vehicles, binds the uni joint. otherwise they tend to tear teeth off the gears, which is hardly unique to toyota. Danas are cheap and plentiful and have huge aftermarket support in the US, which makes them a logical choice.
