help needed whining noise

Post by Monty »

I have a HJ60

THere is a noise coming either from the rear diff or the gearbox
i have a dertoit locker, just did the uni joint and tightened the pinion bearing however this noise is still there
i drove around today in front wheel drive, there wasnt the noise so its possible that the pinion bearing is gone, however there would be no strain on the rear output shaft of the gearbox would there without the tailshaft in so it wouldnt make the noise if this was the case?

has anyone any ideas what it could be?

back to topic

Jack up the rear end.. put the diff on stands.

and with a smallish PVC pipe....

NOTE THIS IS A DANGEROUS PROCEDURE.. DO NOT GO UNDER THE CAR WHILST ITS ON. (thou heaps have done it :?)

have a mate turn the car on and put her in a higher gear and slowly turn the wheels,, .... with the PVC pipe,, put it on your ear and listen and move the pipe around the diff to identify the culprit, whether it be at the pumpkin.. (if its there) meaning a problem located in that area... and work it out from there. or bearings or shaft etc.

Otherwise take it into a shop and ask them for their professional opinion.

Could over tightening the Pinion Bearing give that sort of noise...
Not saying that is what you have done  , but I was told to be very particular in how tight i did mine back up.

DID YOU LEAVE YOUR WIFE UNDER THE CAR THE LAST TIME YOU HAD IT UP ON STANDS????
